Poem-a-Day: #1 6 and Nonfiction Monday: What We Wear (Maya Ajmera)

pink, red, blue daisies
dance and sway to draw your eyes–

dying for drama

Plants in their natural state are always gorgeous, but I do love the totally fake and cheerful colors of dyed daisies! So, that’s where I got my haiku from today.

Photos of joyous kids from all around the world bring nonfiction picture book? What We Wear: Dressing Up Around the World?(Charlesbridge, 2012), by Maya Ajmera, to life. The text for the entire book is only a few sentences long and describes the different reasons kids dress up: to have fun, celebrate culture, indicate religious beliefs, etc. Each photo simply names the country it is taken in. The back matter has some extension activities but no further details about the pictures/costumes. This is a minimalist introduction to the subject matter, but it’s perfect for pre‑K to 1st grade. You really can’t help but smile as you read this book!

I wish the photos were bigger for large-group sharing. But kids will probably want to look through this on their own, too, so as long as it’s available for individual browsing, that’s probably not a problem.

My younger daughter, Maddie, was fascinated with the book (un)Fashion and reread it many times over the years. She would have loved this book when she was little!

The Nonfiction Monday Roundup?is at Nonfiction Detectives.?Now get outta here and go learn something :>)

  1. I love the look on that adorable boy’s face! This seems like a great book for the preschool set. Mine are fascinated by dressing in traditional dress.

  3. My son is only 20 months, but he loves Global Babies, so I checked this out from the library. He really enjoyed the photos and was particularly fascinated with the boys in the Philippines who have masks.

    1. Hi Carol–Cool! Yes, I’m thinking classroom application, but I bet toddlers will just love this book, too! Thanks for sharing his favorite:>)

  5. That picture on the cover is just adorable — what a great way to introduce kids to children around the world!
