Hi, educators! I’ve got a new nonfiction title out called Crayola Wild World of Animal Colors (Lerner, 2018). I never get tired of writing about animals:>) And I’m pleased to say that School Library Journal gave it a lovely review:
PreS-Gr 1–Animals not only come in a variety of colors, but also make use of their colors: a chameleon turning yellow, orange, and red when it feels frightened or the guppy fish whose bright tails are used to attract a mate. Colors are part of an animal’s anatomy and its behavioral design for a reason. Salas offers a vivid and easy-to-follow account of the subject that will appeal to the senses of older preschoolers and primary grade readers. The narrative is well organized; Salas concisely enumerates much of the information. The text moves along playfully, relying on intermittent rhyming. Readers will learn that animals use colors for protection, to camouflage, to hunt, and to mate. The high quality and close-up color photographs not only highlight the text, but also draw children’s attention to the specific quality of the animals and their surroundings dominating the scene. These colorful images empower the overall aesthetic of this informational book, enriching the learning experience and inviting readers to keep turning the page. Back matter contains a game to match patterns and colors. VERDICT A vibrant informational picture book that will encourage primary grade readers to learn about the use of colors in animals’ anatomy and behavior.–Kathia Ibacache, Simi Valley Public Library, CA
I’m also happy that it’s out in library-bound AND paperback AND Kindle editions all at once! Hoping this book will do its tiny part to turn kids into animal lovers.
Congrats, Laura! It looks great! I’m curious… was this a work-for-hire or did you propose your own idea to Lerner/Crayola?
Thanks, Susanna–the 2 Crayola books I’ve done have been wfh, but w more autonomy than usual. Fun to do!
Congratulations, Laura!
Thanks, Kimberly!
Yay Laura! Congratulations on this new book and the 4 others to come!!! Wow! So cool. How exciting to move to a new area… bringing new discoveries, friends, and opportunities. I’m happy for you! Big news for me… I took an early retirement incentive in my district and will be working part time for Teachers College as a Units of Study presenter. If you have any other ideas I might pursue… please send them my way. I want to keep working with teachers and writing with kids!
Best to you,
Kim
Kim, congratulations! That is amazing news. How awesome to be at Teachers College. Will keep you in mind if/when I hear about cool opportunities for amazing teachers/poetry-builders!
