Yesterday’s poem was just a little bit spooky, so today I’m moving on to totally creepy! The book is Nightmares: Poems to Trouble Your Sleep, by Jack Prelutsky (illustrations by Arnold Lobel–Frog and Toad would be freaked out, I’ve gotta say!). It’s an out-of-print oldie, but a goodie to look for used or through your library system. If you’re a fan of the slightly gruesome, you’ll love this book. Here’s my favorite poem, which my husband Randy introduced me to, about a nasty gentleman known as The Ghoul The gruesome ghoul, the grisly ghoul, He lunges fiercely though the air He cracks their bones and snaps their backs He slices their stomachs and bites their hearts Fingers, elbows, hands and knees And when the gruesome grisly ghoul –Jack Prelutsky, all rights reserved |

Check out this image that goes with this poem, with that ghoul watching the kids through the schoolhouse window. Eeuuuuuw. Delicious!
And if you came here looking for 15 Words or Less Poetry, welcome! Your challenge today is to write a poem based on the creepy cover image above from Nightmares! I’m on a three-day poetry residency with fourth-graders, and I have an evening presentation, too, so I probably won’t be able to comment. But you guys have been giving each other great feedback–keep it up! (Click on the guidelines link in the sidebar if you’ve never played before.)
