Wake up your poetry brains with 15 Words or Less (guidelines are here)!
I had a looooong wait in the Boston airport as I was leaving NCTE last month, so I hung out with this handsome bull (Brahmin bull?) for a while.?Here are 3 things this photo makes me think of:
1) face-painting fans at football games
2) creepy clowns
3) mad cow disease
And here’s my first draft!
Mad Cow?
Knives,
paint brushes,
squeezing hands…
Humans always have
something up
their sleeves

Now it’s your turn! Have fun? and stick to? 15 WORDS OR LESS!??(Title doesn’t count toward word count:>)?
Why did they paint me?
Why am I tied here?
Don’t stare!
Oh, moo-hoo
Poor bull. Love the moo-hoo.
Ha! Moo-hoo! Love it.
Ha! Funny ending:>

I enjoyed your ditty about things up our sleeves. Made me think of sayings, and your wait made me think of waiting for my daughter to come home for Christmas from Chicago.
Coming Home
The road from Chicago
is long…
Will I see you again
before cows come home?
Margaret
I like your touch of sadness about saying good-bye.
Love the way this turns from the statement of fact to your emotions (and the clever cow reference!)
What a lovely plaintive quality to this, Margaret…

Laura, school colors apply here, for sure. My last name prompts a “bit of silly.”
Compliment or Contradict
The yin and yang
of Notre Dame:
football lacking,
try bull riding,
an Irish thing?
Once again, an oops. I meant “Complement” not Compliment in the title.
Terrific idea, Martha. You are knowledgeable about school colors.
Oh, yeah. O’Quinn. Good one.
Ha! Very clever, Martha:>)

Meaning of the Wall Street Icon
Do horns’ upward sweep
signal a rising market,
or, a stab in our backs?

A new concept. Creative and I like it.
Love it! The bull market! Yep. Eventually a stab in our portfolio!
Diane, if we ever actually meet, we are going to be good friends, I’m sure of it. Love this haiku-with-a-conscience.
I look forward to it, Julie!
Oooooh. Sharply put. Never turn your back on a bull OR an investment–neither is trustworthy…?

ENVY
What Now?
Holy Cow?
Wow!
Here I sit
Just a plain
Old
Sow.
I like all those “ow” sounds.
Amusing, too.
Lots of fun, Joy!
It’s ok, pig! You don’t have to have paint to be beautiful:>)

COWF– USED
Where’s pasture?
Wide sky?
Is this where bovines
gone bad
end up when they die?

I love all of the compassion shown for the bull.
Your title is great! Your idea is creative. Like it.
Aw. It probably is:>(

Surprise
This colorful toy,
a sight to see,
waits beside
the Christmas tree.
For some reason, this made me think of a mechanical
pony that we bought for our boys, but they liked the box
more than the pony! (Does anyone remember Marvel the Mustang?)
Hahaha! Love that story. A mechanical pony sounds fun! I never liked the cardboard boxes, but I do remember using the Styrofoam forms that came in many boxes in the months after Christmas. I usually made Barbie rooms/homes out of them, or houses for little miniature creatures I made (since those were before Littlest Pet Shop and Polly Pocket and such).

Boston Bull?s Lament
Far away in the hills
live bulls that are not painted
with anything but rain.
?Kate Coombs
Love your last line!!
Poor bull, unhappy with his decoration. Like your idea.
Oh. My.
Gorgeous.

I like your poem as if he’s trapped under all that paint, Laura, and disgusted at what humans do. As I’m from Denver, I suspect that was a Bronco bull from there as they were playing Boston that Sunday night, and lost badly while I was flying home. So here’s my response:
?Give me land, lots of land,?
like Bing.
Heading west to Denver,
then I?ll sing!
That bull wants to head west, too. Like your rhyme.
I love the thought of this Boston-trapped cow longing for wide-open spaces…

Laura, love the cow’s POV. Makes me wonder what cows would do if they had hands instead of hooves.
I’m guessing they’d be pretty dangerous! And it would probably serve us all right!

Cloaked in darkness,
sunrise warms
her breath,
rays of light
pierce
the waning night.
What a lovely image, Buffy. I especially like sunrise warming her breath!

What’s there to do?
Just Moooo….

Laura, I Just saw this in my inbox and this little ditty popped into my head:
MISTAKEN IDENTITY
No bull,
I’m not
a cow
or gnu.
I have
no ‘moo’ –
I am
zebu!
– Matt Forrest Esenwine
Ha! Brilliant!

Fun. Here’s mine (I keep skirting the edges of cheating – here the ampersands don’t count.)
She’s bovinely
& divinely
blue, blue
through & through
although, it’s true, her moo
is kinda orange-blue.
*bovinely* – Who could stop reading a poem with THAT in the first line?
