Happy Poetry Friday! (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.)
In a couple of weeks, an anthology called One Minute Till Bedtime (Little, Brown), edited by former Children’s Poet Laureate Kenn Nesbitt, comes out. It’s already gotten a starred review from Kirkus (woohoo!), and I can’t wait to get my copy on November 1, publication day! Here’s my contribution to this anthology of all new poems from all kinds of poets.
Our wings are leathery
Sheets of stretchWe carve the sky
At night we etchA trail through twilight
Chasing gnatsWe swoop
We dive
We flyWe’re bats

Michelle Heidenrich Barnes has a fantastic interview with Kenn, info about One Minute Till Bedtime, plus Kenn’s poetry challenge to us for October’s Ditty, so don’t miss it.
And for more poetry fun, don’t miss the Poetry Friday Roundup. Irene Latham at Live Your Poem is hosting, and she always has wonderful thoughts and poems to share.
Love the bounce you created, Laura, while still keeping a bit of nighttime spookiness! Congrats on being included!
Congratulations, Laura. What a delightful poem you created-and to think that I used to have such negative thoughts of bats. You made them interesting winged characters in the nighttime sky.
Love it (and must admit to liking bats, too). Like you, I can’t wait to see this book in print.
The bats are clapping, Laura. Lovely poem. Congrats!
My husband wants to put a bat house on our house to help with mosquitos. I’m not too sure about this idea. They kind of scare me, but fascinate me at the same time. I look forward to reading this new book of poems.
Such an energetic little poem, Laura. We’re all on countdown mode for this book, it seems. #cantwait
I love the “leathery/sheets of stretch”–a perfect description! I can picture their etchings–what fun!
I’ve pre-ordered the anthology, Laura, know it will be wonderful! “Sheets of stretch”-exactly right!
What a wonderful poem, perfect for this spooky season! Congratulations on the anthology, it looks wonderful!
Dear Laura, I am loving the stretch and etch of this poem! Congratulations on its inclusion in the anthology. So many wonderful poets’ work in there. What a treasure! xo
Congratulation on your poem’s inclusion in this anthology. I love the image of bats etching trails through twilight!
Those first two stanzas are magic, Laura! This looks like such a fun book–and all the more because I recognize some of the contributors
This is great. I love your poetry and so do my students.
Love the leathery sheets of stretch. Can’t wait to read the book. Any ARCs left to review?
I love the energy of the verbs in this, Laura. It’s fabulous.

Allow me to echo everyone else’s comments, Laura. (Echo? Get it? heehee), Love those “leathery sheets of stretch” etching trails at suppertime.
I love the cadence of this poem, Laura…although I am not a fan of bats!
Thanks, Tara:>)
Fantastic poem! I’m moving slowly from emo type poetry to whimsical. Gosh, is it fun….and much harder to do well than I expected! What a great mentor text for me to add to my collection of inspiration. And, yes….going to get that book for some wonderful new moms in my life. <3
True! And thanks:>) Light verse is tricky, but fun to write. I started out writing only very emotional poems, because they came from real life heartache. It’s what started poetry spouting out of me. But now I see pretty much everything as fodder for poems. I made lovely little “anthologies” of my favorite poems–poems printed out on index cards and gathered into little mini photo albums. The things we do to gather poems we enjoy or admire:>)
