I was in Wisconsin last week, leading (with Lisa Bullard, my Mentors for Rent partner), the Redbery Writers’ Intensive. It was definitely intense, and we had a terrific time working with five fabulous writers. More on that in a later post. After the retreat, we stayed on for the 10th annual Northwoods Children’s Book Conference, and one of last year’s Writers’ Intensive attendees, Diana Randolph, was there. Diana has a lovely new poetry collection called Beacons of the Earth and Sky, which travels through the seasons of the year and includes one of her paintings with almost every poem. Here’s one that echoes a bit of the scenery from this year’s intensive!
The paper is white, despite the lavendar tint my phone appears to have given it! If you click on the book title’s link above, you can also read another poem from this collection:>)
The inspiring Linda Baie at TeacherDance has the?Poetry Friday roundup. Enjoy!
So much to love in this poem…especially “plucked from whispering wind” – that’s exactly what it must be like.
That’s my favorite phrase, too, Tara!

Sounds like a fun week! I love the image of the composer “dabbing music notes on paper.”
It was, Dori! Isn’t this lovely–so many art forms referenced here: music, painting, nature…

Beautiful poem and illos. I bet that’s a nice book 🙂
It is, Catherine. I really wish more poetry collections for grownups had art with them.

Wow Laura, this is a gorgeous book; the poems and the paintings are breath-taking. I like both, but that winter poem with the grosbeak surprise is wonderful. It makes me want to be right there, snowshoes and all!
It really puts you right in that moment, doesn’t it?

“sundipped leaves” – absolutely beautiful, thanks for sharing this poem Laura! So lovely. Can’t wait to hear about your other adventures. 🙂
That is gorgeous, isn’t it? Some of Diana’s phrases make it feel like nature is appearing right before you in 3-D as you read the poem.

I wish we could wish back the beautiful leaves onto the trees and the warm afternoons to sit and contemplate them…
Me, too!
