Happy Poetry Friday! (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.)
I’m excited for the upcoming publication of my friend Joyce Sidman’s Before Morning! It publishes on October 4, and it’s just gorgeous.
This winter poem is set to stunning illustrations by Beth Krommes, and it’s racking up the stars, folks. Five of them! Here are my very favorite lines:
Let the air turn to feathers,
the earth turn to sugar,
and all that is heavy turn light.
–Joyce Sidman, all rights reserved, from Before Morning
Good books, good friends, a good snowstorm, and good poems all accomplish that feeling of wonder, of darkness turning light, for me. This book has me drooling for winter, though I want to enjoy a long, gorgeous fall first. And, though the text (as always) is the most enchanting part for me, if you visit the Amazon page and scroll down, you’ll see sketches of the process of Beth’s art. So cool!

I’ve heard so much about this book, I can’t wait to see it! Thanks for this little glimpse inside, Laura.
Yes, lots of buzz. The text is one of those almost melancholy, painfully beautiful, let it be so kind of poems. Sigh.
Oh, a new Joyce Sidman book! YAY! I can’t wait. Thanks for the post.
Enjoy, Rosi!
Those three lines you shared are exquisite. Thank-you.
Happy to share Joyce’s beautiful words!
Oh, that is a lovely poem… imagining snow, and since it’s pretty chilly this morning, it works!
Me, too! I have to close my eyes and pretend I’m in a cabin in the snowy woods when I read this book:>)
This is an impressive find for sure, Laura. Each illustration calls up floating words and then there are Joyce’s words turning the heavy to light.
It is really kind of magical:>)
How exciting!! Fascinating to get the behind-the-scenes glimpses.
I always love seeing sketches. The visual arts process is a mystery to me.
I’ve been looking forward to this one, too! It’s a beauty, for sure.
I want an audiobook of this poem. It would be so zen and calming and hope-filled…
Thanks for this glimpse, Laura. It’s been pre-ordered, and I’m looking forward to it!
I think you’ll love it!
I can’t wait to see this book! So happy for Joyce that her words and Beth Krommes’ pictures are knocking it out of the ballpark!!
Hope you love it, Mary Lee:>)
Those are wonderful lines. Looks like a great book.
It is–very…zen isn’t quite the right word. It feels kind of surreal to me. Like a Cirque d’Soleil (sp?) show could be built around it, ya know?
I’ve also been waiting for this beauty! Thanks for the link and the excitement about it’s launch!
Today’s the day! Hope you enjoy it!
