Belly of the Beast [15 words or less poems]

Wake up your poetry brains with 15 Words or Less (guidelines here)!

15WOLs

Randy and I went to see Canadian folksinger Gordon Lightfoot perform a couple of weeks ago. The stage design was very simple, with these long skinny triangles of fabric stretched taut in the background. Different colored lights dreamily came on and off during part of the concert, and when the red lights came on, it felt like the band and audience were trapped inside the mouth of a beast gnashing its bloody red teeth (I know!). And I’ve been watching Shark Week shows this week, which feels extra appropriate…

This image makes me think of:

1) obviously, being eaten by a giant beast!
2) searchlights in the sky
3) a crowd gathered around a burning building

And here’s my?first draft. Somehow, when it came time to write my poem, I saw flowers and fireworks rather than something more predatory.

Geraniums

Now it’s your turn! Have fun and stick to 15 WORDS OR LESS!??(Title doesn’t count toward word count:>) If you leave a poem in the comments, and if it’s 15 words or less, I’ll try to respond!

NOTE: My sister Patty is up in Minnesota visiting me for a week! Today, we’re going to the gym, meeting my older daughter, Annabelle, for tacos, and going to an improv comedy show–whee! So, I don’t know whether I’ll be home long enough to comment on poems this week. I’ll keep my fingers crossed, but no promises.

  1. What a great salute to geraniums. I loved the sizzling petals. There’s a building in my area that is used for teacher staff development. Inside, there’s a corridor lined with geraniums and other potted plants. A great treat on a busy workday. Your poem brought back those memories. Thanks!

  3. Morning’s red sky
    held at bay.
    Courageous trees
    save the day!

Laura, I plant geraniums where I can see them while washing dishes. Your poem is spot on- sometimes they’re a‑blaze with color! Enjoy your sister’s visit!

    1. I love these trees being the defense! I’ve never had a geranium before. I have a terrible black thumb, and for a few weeks, I thought I had killed this one. But then it burst out one day, all of the spots where I’d deadheaded suddenly shooting out red flowers. Love it! Thanks–we’re having a great time!

  7. Beauty or Beast

    Vivid colors
    belie blackened
    tree trunks
    ablaze
    searing vegetation
    leaving devastation
    scars remain
    forever.

Laura, enjoy your sister’s visit. Your verse is summer; geranium is a one-word definition for the season.

    1. Oh, what a fiery poem, Martha. I love your use of the word “belie.” Such nice echoes with Beauty and the Beast, fairy tales, and destruction/regeneration. Lovely!

  11. Reminds me of selecting fabric and having it tossed out to be measures and cut.

Getting Fabric for a Red Dress

    Fiery bolts
    Cast across
    Cutting tables;
    Silken sails
    Settle softly -
    Fuschia holds
    My dress.

Have fun with your sister and daughter!

  13. Multiple Choice

    Music and color
    collide,
    crashing like cars on highways.
    Where does one end
    or begin?
