A Poem for National Pig Day on March 1 [Classroom Connections] [Poetry Friday]

Happy Poetry Friday! (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.)

[My Classroom Connections posts will share a way to connect one of my books or poems to a classroom topic–often something timely that you might be covering in the next month or so. Please share this post if you have educator friends who might be interested–thanks!]

Did you know that March 1 is National Pig Day? Neither did I! But here’s a poem to celebrate, anyway. It’s from Flashy, Clashy, and Oh-So Splashy: Poems About Colors (Capstone Press, 2008).

Flashy, Clashy, and Oh-So Splashy: Poems about ColorA Blue-Ribbon Gal
This pig is a beauty, you see that it’s true,
   Clippety-cloppety, troppety-slop.
As gentle and light as the morning’s first dew,
   Slippety-stroppety, flippety-clop.
I noticed her first at a pig beauty show
   Oinkety-boinkety, shuffley-huff.
She twirled a baton and she sang like a pro
   Oinkety-ploinkety, truffley-stuff.
She’s graceful and smooth for a pig of her size
   Squealety-mealety, chunkety-shove
She won a blue ribbon! She won the big prize!
   Wheelety-flop, I’m in piggety love.
–Laura Purdie Salas, from Flashy, Clashy, and Oh-So Splashy! (Capstone Press, 2008)

And here’s Jon Scieszka reading his True Story of the Three Little Pigs. Ha!

  1. I’m in piggety love as well. 🙂 This reminds me of a series I did on county fair poems… oh those blue ribbon winners! Thank you, Laura. xo

  2. No, I did not know about National Pig Day & now I’m glad I do. Your ultra-rhyming is “pig-perfect”, especially loving is “Oinkety-ploinkety, truffley-stuff.” Thanks for that “real story” too. I still have the book, so funny! Scieszka is great.

  3. Laura, who knew there was a National Pig Day. I love Jon Scieszka’s True Story of the Three Little Pigs. I can’t believe it has been out for 25 years. I used to read the story to my students. Have you ever met Jon at either ILA or NCTE? He is quite a character.

    1. I’ve heard him speak several times and been introduced to him a couple of times. We both read our work in a Poetry Blast at ALA one year. I’m sure he wouldn’t remember me, but yes, he is a character!

  4. National Pig Day cracks me up! Just have to share: this week my grandson asked his mom, “Just what kind of a creature is Piglet?” Wait until I tell him there is a National Pig Day. LOL

    1. Hehe! When our younger daughter was little, she asked one time, “Is that chicken the food or chicken the animal?” I’m not sure we had the heart to tell her then that they are the same thing…

  5. National Pig Day…with poems like yours it will have to be about more than bacon and ham! Love all the fun with words and sounds in this poem.

  6. Love what you did with your refrain in your poem, “Clippety-cloppety, troppety-slop. Slippety-stroppety, flippety-clop. Oinkety-ploinkety, truffley-stuff.” What a fun and galloping poem to recite, thanks Laura!

    1. Thanks–it was SO hard for me to write a silly poem! I should try it more often, because I did end up liking it:>)
