Chandelier Jellyfish? [15 Words or Less Poems]

Hello, and welcome! This is 15 Words or Less Poems, a low-pressure way to wake up your poetry brain (guidelines here), and I’m very glad you’re here.

I love public art. When I walk through a building or a square and there are interesting and unexpected shapes, forms, and colors, I feel happy.

Photo: Laura P. Salas

This image makes me think of several things:

  1. a piano the Jetsons might play
  2. DNA
  3. paper quilling (an art form my sister did when I was a kid and which has been making a comeback the past few years)

And here’s my first draft. I ended up thinking of sound waves and how what we say, good or bad, lingers…And I got the kindest email this morning, as I wait here in the hospital for Randy to have shoulder surgery. It was from another writer, someone I don’t know, telling me what my books and blog posts, etc., for writers have done for her. It was just lovely. What a spirit-lifter on an anxious morning:>)

It’s your turn! Have fun and stick to 15 WORDS OR LESS! (Title doesn’t count toward word count.)

  1. How true.…the words linger as long as we do. Lovely.

    Each feather
    inconsequential
    immaterial
    ignoble
    til wings lift
    flutter
    fly
    soaringcircles
    in the sky

  2. This made me think of an explosion.

    Nine Months of Wondering

    Expectations,
    girl or boy?
    Moment of birth-
    explosion of joy!

    1. Well, I’ll say that giving birth certainly FEELS like an explosion–ha! Love that final line, Cindy!

  3. Good morning to all. Having entered the generation of great-grands, I never cease to be amazed at their toys and games. I can definitely see this photo as summer entertainment. Laura, your verse radiates tenderness. Hope hubby is doing well.

    Goodbye Lawn Sprinklers

    Flip switch
    sprinkler hose
    rises,
    erupts;
    rainbow-hued water
    awakens
    laughter,
    squeals!

    1. Oh, I love this mix of technology and old-fashioned fun, Martha! I can hear the squeals:>)

  4. I love the words “Kindness Stays.” I want to paint a sign for my classroom. I like it much better than “Be Kind or Leave”.

This morning the wood duck eggs that we have been watching with a Ring doorbell camera for months hatched out. You can see my post on Instagram or Facebook. Here’s my poem:

    Ripple Effect

    One egg hatches
    then another.
    Soon the whole nest
    is chattering.

    Margaret

    1. Margaret, Kindness Stays is “kinder” than the other phrase. My daughter was able to watch 7 hatchlings (geese) make their appearance outside her office window.

  5. Wow, Laura…beautiful poem in so few words. This made me think of soaring.

    SPLISH, SPLASH, WHEE!
    By Dianne Moritz

    SPLISH,
    SPLASH,
    WHEE!
    Such fun in the sea.
    Diving, swimming, and…
    my float soaring free!

  6. Love that you’ve made kindness as concrete as a warm sweater–I can feel your poem’s hug. I was playing with skinnys yesterday so my mind went there.

    Waterspout

    Shape-shifter:
    spiraling
    serpent
    lifts
    into
    spiraling
    cloud
    storms
    into
    spiraling
    shape-shifter.

  7. Buffy, thank you for introducing me to “skinnys.” I’ve learned so much on Thursday mornings!

  8. not a personal experience but what the pic made me think of

    poem by Jessica Bigi

    Marcels Of Life

    doctor sad lesion

    colors unfolding

    according’s inside

    a child’s heart

    herring mum’s

    first time

  9. Laura, I hope Randy is healing nicely after surgery although the pain must be aggravating.
Your “Kindness Stays” poem is a clever poem with a great simile bringing it to closure.

Here are my quick thoughts on the image:

    whirlybird,
    wired for take-off,
    spinning,
    zigzagging horizontally,
    artistically spreading joy.

Enjoy the conference. I hope you do not get the torrential rain that we had.
