Classified Haiku [Poetry Friday]

Happy Poetry Friday!

Last month, we Poetry Sisters wrote poems in the style of e.e. cummings. Whew! I’m glad that is finished. For July, we decided to do haiku in the vein of classified ads. Two ancient forms–ha!

We were a bit behind this month and didn’t really do much revising. I wrote my first drafts while watching a drum corps show last Friday, and I haven’t changed too much of them. I went with a kind of variation on my riddle-ku. Maybe riddle-classi-ku? I was picturing elementary school teachers perhaps trying these with their students.

Now, don’t forget to read all the Poetry Sisters’ poems below. They came up with some really clever and sophisticated haiku/senryu. I’ll be adding new links as soon as I have them. Until then, their names still link to their beautiful poems from last month. So give a click and read or reread:>)

  1. I love all three of your poems, but the butterfly really speaks to me. I think it’s interesting that Kelly, you, and I wrote poems with an insect theme. I wonder what inspired us …

  3. What a clever combination, riddle-classi-ku. Must try these with my kiddos. Yours are great mentor texts. I like the buzzing eyes the best.

    1. That was my favorite part, too, Maureen:>) I’m kind of addicted to strikeouts. I hope your 5th graders have a blast with them.

  5. Happy Friday. Love haikus and love the “want ads” concept. Yours evoke three different emotions — humor, romance and new beginnings. Thanks Laura.

    1. Thank YOU, Martha! I struggled with the concept of classifieds, but it was fun once I kind of wrapped my head around it. I’d like to write more. Maybe they should be Facebook Garage Sale ads or something, though, to keep up with the times.

  7. I think it would be an enormously fun project in itself to write personals ads in haiku for an afternoon. That “Buzz me, honey!” made me laugh out loud.

  9. Love all these, Laura, the “slick…slender appendages”. Fun surprise! You all give great ideas for trying new kinds of poems. Thank you!

  11. I adore the breezy way that last one finishes. Buzz me honey! And I greatly admire how you’ve made these filled with concrete image, kid-friendly AND riddles too. Dang, girl.

    1. Thanks, Sara–one thing I love about this monthly project is how clear it’s becoming what strengths and weaknesses each of us has and how we approach poems. I love that we could now probably send all our poems without signing them and we’d each likely be able to tell who wrote what. Concrete and kid-friendly are the qualities I gravitate to. Depth and sophistication, as much as I’d like to claim them, are not.

  13. Laura,

I enjoyed reading them all–especially the last one. I have written fairy tale classified ad poems–but never thought of writing ads as haiku. What a clever idea!

    1. I *think* it was Sara who suggested we do that. It sounded easy. Mine are kind of basic, but they were pretty fun to do, once I wrapped my head partway around it…

Especially the butterfly and frog, but they were all so good!

  17. You girls are amazing. Not only do you challenge yourselves, but then you UP the challenge just so things don’t ever get too easy! (Loved the editorial comment on your sestina month!!)

    1. THanks, Mary Lee. It has been a fun journey so far. Well, some months have been more fun than others. But I’ve definitely learned something every single month.
