I’m sharing a poem from Fiddleheads to Fir Trees: Leaves in All Seasons?(Mountain Press Publishing, 2013),??by Joanne Linden, a friend of mine and former crit group buddy. The glorious artwork by Laurie Caple (cover image below does not do it justice!) combined with lovely poems by Joanne, combined with leaves–well, how could you go wrong?
Here’s one of my favorites–it brings back memories of swimming in lakes and rivers while growing up in Florida, where every brush against my lake was a potential snake or alligator.
Curly-leaf Pondweed
Curly leaves
sway in rippled water,
Twisting
???? Twirling
????????? Tickling
the swimmer’s legs
like snakes slithering
along a log.

And here I am reading Joanne’s lovely poem:
The Poetry Friday Roundup today is at Carol’s Corner–enjoy!
I hadn’t seen this collection, Laura. Thanks for introducing me to it. Joanne’s poem is lovely.
So glad you liked it!

Thank you, Laura – how nice to have the poem read aloud! That’s a terrific new (?) feature. And thanks for sharing Joanne’s poem – I’m going to see if I can put my hands on the collection. Gorgeous cover!
THanks, Julie–I’m not really comfy with my recording voice, but…I want to get better:>) The art is glorious in this book. I would hang it on my wall.

Ewww! This poem gives me goosebumps! I don’t know this book, but now I want to find it and read some more! I love the way this poem feels in my mouth!
Oh, isn’t that a great compliment for a poet and poem–when the poem feels good in your mouth! Glad you like it!

Laura this is a beautiful book and poem and new to me
You share such wonderful books of poems I’m going to see if I can get a copy I’m hoping to get to read some more by this writer do you know if any of her poems are in book with other poets
Oooh, good question. I don’t think so. She has had a couple of stories in anthologies, I believe, but not poems.

Thank you for this poem, Laura! I love Joanne’s alliterative use of s’s, l’s, and t’s…interesting to see and fun to read. (And hear read by you!)
Thanks, Tamera–I’m a sucker for alliteration, too :>)

Ooh, I love this! I’ll have to find this collection, Laura – and practice reading aloud as you do.
That’s one reason I’m doing the SoundCloud stuff–trying to get better at reading aloud:>)

I don’t know this book, either, Laura, & it looks gorgeous. I grew up in Missouri, & while we didn’t fear alligators, we did worry about snakes & turtles. The poem’s lines about legs is wonderful. Thanks for telling about the book!
It is lovely–both is poems and art:>) I never worried about turtles (somehow, snapping turtles just weren’t on my radar). Too focused on my gator phobia, I suppose:>)
Congrats on being the DMC giveaway winner! Let me know where you’d like me to send Water Can Be… (or a different book if you prefer) and who you’d like it signed to. Yay!

I’ll have to check out this book, Laura. On my bulletin board is a graphic of the different classifications of leaves and what each shape is named — such rich vocabulary.
I loved the leaf project both my girls did in 7th grade:>)

This book looks wonderful. I’m with Carol, though. Something tickling my legs while I’m swimming “like a snake slithering along a log” gives me the willies just thinking about it! Thanks for sharing!
Any poem that makes me shudder is an effective one:>)

I am a total wimp when it comes to swimming in water with creatures in it. It is a beautiful poem, though– I’ll stick to swimming in her words.
Swimming in words is the best way to experience most scary things:>)

This is just to say that I have been here and read your words, but surgery on both thumbs last Tuesday prevents me from typing a personalized comment. Forgive me — copy/paste is the best I can do this week! 🙂
Aw, Mary Lee–you are too dedicated!

I love “like snakes slithering along a log.” That’s exactly why they’re so startling even though they’re just leaves.
Yes! Joanne put into words the simile our brain automatically makes:>)

What a summery and just a little bit scary poem! And, Laura, I love how you support and headline your fellow poets. This does look like a gorgeous book.
Thanks, Violet:>) And I do love poems that are just a little bit scary!
