Not all my poems are based on real life. My warbler poem last Friday? I just needed a specific bird, that’s all. But this one is definitely real life. Our older daughter’s tropical-themed bridal shower happened on Zoom yesterday. And you know what? It was good. :>)
Like most everybody else, I’m experiencing lots of upheavals lately! I have no huge National Poetry Month plans–just hoping to share an imagepoem here each day (or as often as I can). I’m participating in Laura Shovan’s awesome #WaterPoemProject the best I can, so most of my poems will come from either that or from the PAD (Poem A Day) Challenge at Writers Digest. Grateful for the distraction of poetry and friends!

I saw your sharing on FB & though sad not to be together in the same room, I’m so happy that you all got to celebrate Annabelle’s coming marriage on Zoom! How fun that must have been! Making the equation is just right!

So glad your daughter’s zoom celebration was a success! Although it’s not the same as being together, it has the advantage of bridging distances that otherwise would not be bridged.
We had a zoom Passover Seder with both my siblings and some of our kids. It was the first time I celebrated Passover with my (Minneapolis!) brother in probably 40 years–so that was nice.
Thanks, Buffy–yes, looking on the bright side, right? How lovely that you got to share (a very different, I’m sure) Passover Seder with your brother. Two of Annabelle’s Florida aunts were able to be there virtually, and otherwise they would not have been part of it. Finding blessings…
I’m so glad you were able to celebrate. I toyed with the idea of doing this for my son and his fiancee after their shower was cancelled, but got sidetracked by those upheavals you mentioned. Maybe I should reconsider! Any tips?
Do it! It was honestly just wonderful. A couple tips: Simplify the games and perhaps shorten the overall timeline. Use the Polls feature. Don’t bother with Whiteboard feature because even though it’s super cool, it doesn’t work with anyone who might attend on a mobile device–only laptops. Rope in an extra person to be behind the scenes on technology, spotlighting the video of the guest of honor most of the time, the host occasionally, like when she’s giving game directions, etc. And changing to Gallery View every so often so folks can see all or most of the other attendees. You DO lose most of the interaction of guests with *each other*, but the interaction between the guests and the bride-to-be was amazing. Well worth it. The host also invited people to shop off the registry (Target), have it shipped directly to the guest of honor. In our case, her fiance intercepted and wrapped everything before the shower. If you have other questions, let me know. I’m so glad we did it. And we videoed it as a keepsake for her, too.
Laura, that’s wonderful that you were able to celebrate your daughter’s shower over Zoom! What a great idea and way to adapt during this difficult time. Your equation poem is perfect! Last spring I substituted for a first grade class, after we were able to accomplish all the work that the teacher left us I started reading your book, Snowman-Cold=Puddle. The book calmed all of us, the children were attentive, and brought us a creative ending to the day! I asked the students what the equations meant and some of the students understand the poems very well! Unfortunately, dismissal arrived before we finished. I look forward to reading it to children again and teaching them to write an equation poem. Thank you for beautiful and creative book.
