Happy National Poetry Month! Thanks for dropping by my Poem Starter Video party. Hey, don’t forget this Thursday is Poem in Your Pocket Day! Here are four short poems from The Poetry Friday Anthology your students can use, and here are loads more ideas for the day.
Today’s poem comes from? The Poetry Friday Anthology (Common Core K-5 edition): Poems for the School Year with Connections to the Common Core
(Pomelo, 2013), edited by Sylvia Vardell and Janet Wong.?It’s one of my favorite?anthologies to recommend to teachers because of its extraordinary range of poets/poems and its terrific and easy teaching tips. I’m sharing several poems from it this month, in fact! And today’s poem comes from Janet Wong! Yay! Janet is not only a beautiful poet, but she is a do-kind of writer/publisher. She doesn’t just talk about something, she jumps on an idea and makes it happen! And she’s super generous about sharing ideas and?information with other poets. Here is Janet’s super?poem, “The Do Kind.” It’s from the 3rd grade section of the book (Week 21: Love and Friendship).
The Do Kind
When my ball flies over the wall,
you run and get it back. When my books fall down the stairs,
you help me pick them up.Some friends are see friends,
me me me friends. You are the do kind,
the me and you kind.–by Janet Wong, all rights reserved
And here is my Poem Starter Video:

Janet always creates the best voices in her poems. This one is just delightful. Great video, too, Laura!
She does, Renee–you’re right!

I think the Poetry Friday and Kidlitosphere is filled with so many of the “do” kind of people I would love for friends. Another great poetry starter! Thanks Janet and Laura!

FRIEND
When my wallet was emptier
than a country road you loaned
me some green paper until I got
back on track.
When I was racked with pain,
poisonous parts of my body
slowly getting soothed by
medicine, you visited every
day, making me laugh at
those corny jokes.
When I missed the bus due
to cooking breakfast for my
siblings you asked your Mom
to swing on by and give me a
lift to school.
Believe me pal it’s true,
I don’t know how I’d fit,
where I’d be or what I’d do
Without you.

What a great pal you have, Charles–and a terrific poem-tribute to your friendship!
What a great tribute!
