Fire on a Windy Day [National Poetry Month]

Fire on a Windy DayI’m a bit of a pyromaniac. I don’t start fires, but I do love them, and having a fireplace is one of the things I’ve loved most about moving this past year! I was warming up by the fire while the winds howled outside yesterday, and that led to this #wonderbreak. [Want to learn more or join in?] By the way, our gas fireplace does not make smoke…that line just came from campfire memories. I’m surprised how even a fireplace fire has the same effect on me, though: I look into the flames and almost immediate take a huge breath. I feel my shoulders rise and fall, and a fair portion of any stress drains right out of me. It’s like time pauses and the fire says, “You must relax.” And I do.

  1. I’m not one for fires, I’ve seen too many bad ones. I’m also sensitive to the smoke. But I get the same loss of stress at the beach, particularly at night watching and listening to the waves rolling in.

  2. There’s something absolutely mesmerising about the warm flicker of flames. Alas my apartment doesn’t have a fireplace, not even an electric one, but I will guiltily admit that we do put on the fireplace channel around Christmastime, so we can at least pretend to curl up around a roaring fire!

  3. Fire is certainly mesmerizing. I have a nature sounds app (for sleep), and one of the sounds is “fire.” The popping is too random for me to be relaxing, but it does bring to mind some lovely firespun days. Thank you for your poem! xo

  4. Campfires are mesmerising. But I think that instant relaxation thing for me would be the beach. An afternoon at the beach is like a mini-holiday. (Which makes me wonder why I don’t go more often!)

  5. Your poem makes me want to sit out by the fire pit on a crisp evening and watch the flames. I’m glad I do get the chance to play with fire. Just last weekend I helped my husband and father in law with a controlled burn of prairie grasses. I even got to use the drip torch!

  6. I just lit some incense. It has that same effect on me. Breathe in and relax.

  7. I could use a cold wind and a warm fire and a good book about now…
