First Date Haiku [Poetry Friday]

Happy Poetry Friday! Welcome, everyone! (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.)

Well, in this world of chaos right now, poetry is one of the things keeping me calm and grounded. This month’s Poetry Princess challenge theme was “classic,” any form, any topic.

I didn’t really know how to interpret that. But since my personal theme this year is Keep It Simple, I decided to write a haiku (after a list poem failure). And then I realized that the day I was drafting this was the anniversary of my first date with Randy (we’ve been married 32 years now!). In Orlando, Florida, we went ice skating(!), to a very scary movie, and to Steak ‘n’ Shake. Inspired by that date, I wrote this.

I’m looking forward to seeing what classic wonders my Poetry Sisters have written.

  1. Ice skating and Florida seem to be an oxymoron, but the twist at the end proves that it was true love! Happy first date anniversary!

  2. Congrats on 32 years! You are such a great couple. I really like the twistiness of your haiku. It makes me feel like someone pulled a coin out from behind my ear. xo

  3. This is great! I would have been intimidated by that prompt too. I sincerely cannot imagine skating in Orlando…that was unexpected. But, I’ll bet we can count your marriage of 32 a classic! Happy Anniversary!

  4. I saw about your ‘date’ anniversary on FB, and love that now you’re written a poem about it, too. Yes, ‘Zambonis in Florida?’ is the question to remember, Laura. Best to you and the family!

  5. Thirty-two years! Congratulations! I love your sweet haiku, “unlikely as love.”

  6. Congratulations! You have a classic poem for a classic experience. I love it!

  7. “Well, in this world of chaos right now, poetry is one of the things keeping me calm and grounded.”-YES! On the topic of love, how endearing that you penned a poem about a classic moment in your life. 1st date-sweet and look where it turned out!

  8. A “classic” marriage, a “classic” teaching career…it’s all good! Love your take on the prompt!

  9. Your haiku captured your first date perfectly, Laura! Happy 32nd — I had no idea Steak’n’Shake had been around that long! My hubby and I celebrate our 31st in June. Goes by in the blink of an eye, doesn’t it? Be well and stay safe. 🙂

    1. It does–SO quickly. Steak ‘n’ Shake was founded in 1934. Wow! Makes ya feel young:>) Thanks, Bridget!

  10. I agree that poetry is helping me, too. I like your thought process of how and why you wrote a haiku about your first date. Great idea and poem! I like how your poem twists and turns like ice skating. A definite classic! Happy First Date Anniversary. Your poem became a little personal for me because my husband and I ice skated on our first date, also.

    1. Thanks, Gail, and I LOVE that you guys ice skated on your first date, too! Those kind of random connections with poems are wonderful!

    1. Thanks, Laura. I’d never heard of a Zamboni before we moved to Minnesota:>)
