Middle of the Night: Poems from a Wide-Awake HouseOn Tuesday, March 12, my second spring title, In the Middle of the Night: Poems from a Wide-Awake House, comes out. This beautiful book from Wordsong (where many of my very favorite poets have published amazing books over the years) explores the mischief that our household objects and toys get up to while we sleep. Fabulous art from Angela Matteson make the night vivid and dynamic, and all the animated inanimate objects are SO charming! Publishers Weekly said, “Matteson fills her scenes with a sense of whooshing movement and rambunctious energy, making for a fun nighttime outing.” Whee!

Also, on my website, there’s are a bunch of cute activity sheets (mostly courtesy of Angela!) and a Padlet where you can share your own night poems from you or your students. The review of the book from Kirkus says, “Familiar objects, playful language, and imaginative action add up to a collection that will amuse young listeners and, perhaps, inspire them to undertake imaginative explorations of their own,” and that’s exactly what I’m hoping! The Padlet is empty now, but it’s hungry for poems!

In the Middle of the Night

Finally, there’s a blog tour! Yay! Some Poetry Friday friends and other poetry and book lovers will be sharing different things about the book over the next two weeks. For the ones where I did interviews, I tried hard to share different info with each person, so that there’s always something new.  And some of the posts will include giveaways.   1. It’s certainly going to be a wonderful book for classrooms and of course, for the kids! My daughter used to be convinced that her stuffies played in the middle of the night, and swore they were in different places each morning. Have fun this next month Laura!

  3. Ironically, I was up at about 3 am when I saw this post. I guess I shut down all the fun activities in my house! I loved the trailer and look forward to reading more. My class already is fascinated with “Snowman – Cold = Puddle:Spring Equations! You are one creative powerhouse! Congratulations on all your publications, recent and upcoming!
