Happy Poetry Friday! (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.)
On Tuesday, March 12, my second spring title, In the Middle of the Night: Poems from a Wide-Awake House, comes out. This beautiful book from Wordsong (where many of my very favorite poets have published amazing books over the years) explores the mischief that our household objects and toys get up to while we sleep. Fabulous art from Angela Matteson make the night vivid and dynamic, and all the animated inanimate objects are SO charming! Publishers Weekly said, “Matteson fills her scenes with a sense of whooshing movement and rambunctious energy, making for a fun nighttime outing.” Whee!
Here’s the book trailer, which includes “Pencil Plunge,” my poem for Poetry Friday:
Also, on my website, there’s are a bunch of cute activity sheets (mostly courtesy of Angela!) and a Padlet where you can share your own night poems from you or your students. The review of the book from Kirkus says, “Familiar objects, playful language, and imaginative action add up to a collection that will amuse young listeners and, perhaps, inspire them to undertake imaginative explorations of their own,” and that’s exactly what I’m hoping! The Padlet is empty now, but it’s hungry for poems!
Here are some places I’ll be sharing this book soon!
- March 16, 2019: Subtext Bookstore, 10:30 a.m. (St. Paul, MN)
- April 6, 2019: Poetry-palooza three-book-launch party at Red Balloon (St. Paul, MN)
- April 16, 2019: Poetry Round-Up and book signing at TLA (Austin, TX)
Also, it would be a huge help to me if you would add this book to your to-read shelf on Goodreads!
Finally, there’s a blog tour! Yay! Some Poetry Friday friends and other poetry and book lovers will be sharing different things about the book over the next two weeks. For the ones where I did interviews, I tried hard to share different info with each person, so that there’s always something new. And some of the posts will include giveaways. Thank you, blog tour hosts!
Thanks for celebrating with me, Poetry Friday friends. I so appreciate your support and enthusiasm. Today, Catherine Flynn at the fantastic Reading to the Core is hosting the Poetry Friday Roundup with a theme of celebrating International Women’s Day!
It’s certainly going to be a wonderful book for classrooms and of course, for the kids! My daughter used to be convinced that her stuffies played in the middle of the night, and swore they were in different places each morning. Have fun this next month Laura!
Thanks, Linda! I still think my keys must be cavorting at night!
What a fun and lively book, Laura! Congratulations!
Ironically, I was up at about 3 am when I saw this post. I guess I shut down all the fun activities in my house! I loved the trailer and look forward to reading more. My class already is fascinated with “Snowman – Cold = Puddle:Spring Equations! You are one creative powerhouse! Congratulations on all your publications, recent and upcoming!
Aw, thank you. Really, it’s just a confluence of publishing schedules that has led to this poetry palooza! MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT sold back in 2013! Thanks so much for sharing SNOWMAN with your class:>)
My house was quiet, too, when I was up at 3! How does it know?? Congratulations, Laura! It looks like a rockin’ book!
Happy Book Launch, Laura! This collection sounds so fun! I’m looking forward to reading it.

Hooray! It’s just so much fun watching this poetry palooza hit our world. I love the idea of ‘In the Middle of the Night.’ It’s such a kid-friendly idea I know that this book is going to do great. Thanks for not only your fabulous new books but the way you tend to writers in the community. You are an inspiration.
Can’t wait to shine a spotlight on you and your book this week!
I adore this book, Laura and can’t wait to feature it as part of the blog tour! Congratulations on another winner!
