Jack and the Beanstalk poem, by Laura Purdie Salas

Hi, teachers! This week, I’m sharing poems from my new 30 Painless Classroom Poems book, Fairy Tale Garage Sale. The book includes 7 fairy tales, each with an introductory poem and three poems from characters selling junk they don’t want/need anymore. I’m going to share the Jack and the Beanstalk set this week.

Jack and the Beanstalk

Note from the Poet:

OK, this is a ’don’t do what I do? Note. Often in rhyming poetry, a poet will change the natural word order just to make the rhymes work. For example, look at the last five lines. If you were speaking, you’d say, ?Jack stole gold, a hen, and harp, then chopped the plant with a sharp axe blade.? But?that doesn’t rhyme. So I put axe-blade in front of sharp. You might get away with it once in a great while, but it always makes the reader have to stop and think, because it’s not natural. So always avoid it if you can!

  3. Laura, I love the concept of this book and today’s offering is so clever. I am not a teacher in the professional sense of the word, but as a lifelong student I cannot wait for more.

  5. Love this one, Laura, just clever, like Jack! And I’ve been enjoying every one although not always commenting. It’s a terrific idea!

          1. This gave me a good laugh! Any writer with out of print books (including me) knows this is unfortunately not true. BUT I really just wanted to at least have the possibility of reaching teachers and making them feel less intimidated by poetry, so hopefully this will reach some educators once I start spreading the word more. Meanwhile, thank you for buying it:>)

    1. Thanks, Buffy–that one’s scheduled for Friday. But the giant/ogre and his wife will have their poems tomorrow and Wednesday:>)
