Today’s poem comes from Nikki Grimes’ most recent work of excellent poetry. In Words with Wings, Gabby, an outsider and daydreamer, finds a way to make her daydreaming work for her with the help of a fantastic teacher. Here’s one of my favorites:

Isn’t that lovely? And heartbreaking? I can really relate to this poem. Here’s Nikki reading from her book at the ALA Poetry Blast this past summer and a shot where you can see her joyous smile in the lineup of presenting poets. Real-life teacher Ed Spicer, who served as the model for the Mr. Spicer in the book, was also there! But I didn’t get a picture. 🙁 | |

On my list, Laura. There are those that indeed hide like that-sad to know and see! Nikki got it right, didn’t she? Thanks for sharing a bit of this new book.
It’s really a beautiful book, full of heartbreak and hope!

Oh. Heartbreaking indeed. 🙁 Will read this aloud to my group of teacher-students and allied educators next week. So many students who may feel the same way.
That was one of the hardest things for me as a teacher–knowing that so many kids brought SO much baggage with them to school. This book is a lovely way to celebrate art as a way of coping with some of that. And to also celebrate the power of a teacher to make a huge difference for a student.

This will be an important book for my sixth grade classroom, Laura. Thanks for sharing it.
I think this can work for so many grade leveles. Wonderful that you’re using it with your sixth graders…

I loved reading this book. And I was so touched when I read the dedication. How wonderful that Nikki dedicated the book to a real and wonderful teacher – Ed Spicer!
When I got to the end of the book and read that, I, too, was touched by that dedication. And shocked when I met him at ALA:>)
