I shared a poem from Nikki Grimes’ wonderful?Words with Wings?(Wordsong, 2013) here before, and today, I’m sharing another in celebration of the Coretta Scott King Honor this book just won! Woohoo! There is nothing I like more than seeing fantastic writers and books and (of course) poetry getting some awards love:>)There are so many lovely poems in this book, but since we’re in the middle of winter, I’m going to share “Snowflake,” which details Gabby’s daydream when she hears the word.
Snowflake
Say “snowflake,”
I start to shiver;
rip off my mitten
and giggle as one wet,
cold, lacy filigree
of winter white
falls onto my greedy palm,
then melts away.
