Happy Poetry Friday!
I’m making this post live on Thursday night for all you early-birds. Please put your links in Mr. Linky at the bottom of the post. And also click on Mr. Linky to see and visit all of the other Poetry Friday posts. I look forward to visiting everyone’s posts today!
I’ve been sharing some poems from my new poetry collection for teachers called What’s Inside? Poems to Explore the Park. Thank you for your lovely comments on what I’ve shared so far. And here are links to those posts if you haven’t seen them.
What’s Inside This Cocoon?
Changing to Moth
What’s Inside This Egg? (question and answer poems)
What’s Inside This Bud?
Flowerful Flood
What’s Inside This Baseball?
Ninth-Inning Win!
Meet My Collaborator, Ed Spicer!
Now here’s one more couplet question for you:
What’s inside of this green river rush,
this overfilled, winter-chilled watery gush?
A Note from the Poet:
We think of so many things as one thing only. Like a forest is only trees, or a river is only water. So it’s fun to look more closely at something and find what else is there. Being a poet is like being a detective!
Where can you read the answering quatrain for this couplet? I’m so glad you asked;>) It’s in my new book:

What’s Inside? Poems to Explore the Park // Poems by Laura Purdie Salas // Teacher Activities by Ed Spicer
Besides my 15 pairs of What’s Inside poems, you also get all of Ed Spicer’s wonderful classroom activities and lots of tips from me on why poetry is important and how can share it in a no-stress way in your classroom. (As you can probably tell from the series title, all those auxiliary materials are meant to entice educators who don’t already love poetry–which is probably not you!) What’s Inside? is available on Kindle and in paperback (and if you buy the paperback, you get the Kindle e-book free). The Kindle version has color photos to supplement the poems, but they’re black and white in the paperback version.
I really hope you’ll enjoy my new series. This is an experiment for me, reaching out directly to educators. I’d be super grateful if you pass along word of it to your teacher/librarian/homeschool friends. And then, well, we’ll see what happens. My hope is that I can convert some poetry-no-way-ers to poetry-lovers!
Meanwhile, you can read more about the 30 Painless Classroom Poems series here. I’ll be releasing five more titles in the next couple of months, and I can’t wait to share more with you!
OK, thanks for reading–don’t forget to leave your link in THE TOP Mister Linky below! I don’t know why two Mister Linky icons are showing up–there’s only one link in my code! Sorry!
Please ignore the Mister Linky below this text. I’m having issues :>/
Hi, Laura! Do you ever sleep? Thanks for sharing this wonderful project – so enticing to students, I’m sure! – and thank you for hosting today.
Here’s to lots of great poetry read and written in classrooms because of your joint effort!
“Being a poet is like being a detective!” – love that. [ I think I Mr. Linky’d up… I’ve got haiku by another wonderful poet and teacher, Tom Painting. http://www.robynhoodblack.com/blog.htm?post=970783 ]
Thank you, Robyn–I’ll clink glasses to that:>)

[PS – Sorry if I ended up with linking overkill; on my end looks like there are 2 Mr. Linky links at the bottom of the post? Just checking…!]
Thanks for the heads-up–I’m having technical issues, clearly. I can’t get rid of that second Linky link. Sigh.

Congrats on the new book and thanks for hosting this week!
At Alphabet Soup I’m celebrating Fall with three haiku from Pat Mora’s Yum! Mmmm! Que Rico! — and I had fun with three mini pumpkins (my link goes live at 6 a.m. EDT Friday). 🙂
Thanks, Jama–I have Pat’s book–I look forward to seeing which haiku you’ve chosen to feature!

I thought this new project would be a long time coming, but it’s here now! Congratulations, & I certainly will share with all my colleagues! Today, I thought I’d share Irene Latham’s Dear Wandering Wildebeests: Poems From the Water Hole. I’ve never shared it, & it’s almost the two month anniversary, so time to re-look! Thanks Laura for the hosting even. And best wishes for this new book!
Thanks, Linda–and yay for Irene’s book. It’s a fabulous poetry collection! I love both the poems and the art.
PS–You had two links in Mr. Linky, but neither worked–just brought up a 404 error. I added a new link for you. Hope it works!

I’ve been enjoying your poems, Laura! This book sounds like a perfect classroom tool. Today I’m sharing news about the CYBILS Awards and celebrating Shel Silverstein’s 84th (posthumous)birthday!
Thanks, Matt. I’m going to so miss being involved in CYBILS. This will be my first year in 4 of 5 years not being a panelist or judge.

Hi, Laura.
The book looks great. I’ll definitely recommend it to teachers when I’m doing school residencies.
Since my daughter started high school, I decided to (finally) look through my own HS yearbooks and literary magazines. It wasn’t easy, but I found today’s poem, “The Cry of the Jabberwock.” It’s an epic told from the doomed monster’s point of view, written when I was about 16.

Thanks, Laura–I appreciate that! Can’t wait to read your epic poem :>)

Good morning, Laura. My, this is an ambitious and pointed project! I’m looking forward to having these resources in my classroom, and I gleaned some reminders already from Ed Spicer’s front matter. I hope it goes supremely well–30 is a good, not overwhelming number.
Thanks, Heidi. Yeah, we’ll see what happens with it. It’s new territory for me! The front matter is actually all by me, though he wrote a great intro to his activity guide. I listed him as Introduction because there’s no category that really fits. I’m realizing that I should clarify in the book that he did not write the front matter. I don’t want to mislead anybody!

Wow! So many wonderful resources you’re sharing today! How exciting! Can’t wait to share them with my students. 🙂 I’m celebrating music as poetry today by featuring two singers/songwriters in my post today: http://hollymueller.blogspot.com/2014/09/poetry-friday_26.html
Thanks, Holly! I appreciate that. And I love the poetry of lyrics. Looking forward to making it over to your post.

Laura, congrats on the new book! It looks terrific.
Mr. Linky can be so annoying when he’s misbehaving. He’s done that to me, too. 🙂
Thanks, Karen–and grrrrrr on Mr. Linky. He’s got to quit cloning himself!

Happy to be here in the company of so much poetry love. I love Bookspeak! and can’t wait to explore your new collection for teachers. Thanks for hosting.
Fall is here! The American Academy of Poets newsletter led me to two fall poems this week. I revisited an old favorite and discovered a new favorite.
Thanks, Ramona! And I really enjoyed your fall post:>)

I am sorry I’m so late to the Poetry Friday party today!!! Congratulations, Laura–your new book looks amazing, and has such a wonderful concept. You have to be so happy and proud right now! In my PF post today I wave goodbye to summer and welcome fall…I don’t know about you, but I am SO ready for cooler weather! = )
Me, too–fall is my favorite. And I dislike hot weather (born and raised in Florida…happy Minnesotan now:>) Look forward to checking out your post!

Laura, thanks for your lovely comment on the Strand poem. I love the way Poetry Friday speaks to each of us differently, challenges us to go to new places, brings us into different worlds. My Poetry Friday friends do that for me regularly, and I’m happy that today the click-through was worth it for you, too, and that you weren’t tempted to the Back button. 🙂 Thanks again for hosting!
Yes! It’s lovely when an obligation turns out to be a gift:>)
