Yesterday, I went cross-country skiing for the first time. Although I mainly concentrated on set, push, glide, I did get to admire the gorgeous winter scenery. We’re having a snowy winter in Minnesota this year (although we need a fresh snowfall, please), and I love looking at bare trees and evergreen trees against the snow. I never get tired of that.
So, here’s a poem in celebration of the stark beauties of winter.
Winter Trees
All the complicated details
of the attiring and
the disattiring are completed!
A liquid moon
moves gently among
the long branches.
Thus having prepared their buds
against a sure winter
the wise trees
stand sleeping in the cold.
—by William Carlos Williams
The park near my house has trails that are lit at night, so once I get a couple more daytime excursions in, I hope to go skiing one night and admire the liquid moon. Doesn’t that just melt you?
