| Leslie Bulion is such a fantastic science poetry writer! She has fun with it and imparts tons of information at the same time. Last year, I shared a poem from her Hey There, Stink Bug collection. This year, I’m happy to share a poem from her brand new collection, At the Sea Floor Cafe: Odd Ocean Critter Poems (Peachtree, 2011). A couple of paragraphs follow, explaining what siphophores are, how they lure food, and more. The info there will make clear my favorite line: "Those luminescent matadors."
I love the beautiful language–fishes slink and briny drink and all the wonderful word choices she makes. And any upper elementary teacher (or teacher of older kids, in fact) will love using this book in their classroom. And for teachers or parents or librarians who know kids who love nonfiction, this poetry collection will give kids nonfiction content wrapped up in a fun-to-read package.
This is a really nifty collection–I had a great time reading the poems aloud, and I also learned lots of new stuff. Who doesn’t love that?
