Poetry Friday: Jellyfishing, by Leslie Bulion

April 29, 2011 By Laura

Leslie Bulion is such a fantastic science poetry writer! She has fun with it and imparts tons of information at the same time. Last year, I shared a poem from her Hey There, Stink Bug collection. This year, I’m happy to share a poem from her brand new collection, At the Sea Floor Cafe: Odd Ocean Critter Poems (Peachtree, 2011).

Jellyfishing

Small predatory fishes slink
And hunt throughout the briny drink
For deep-sea prey that hop and sink–
Their favorite wiggly treats.

But up swim stealth siphonophores,
Long jellyrolls with wiggle lures.
Those luminescent matadors
Turn hunters into eats.

–Leslie Bulion, all rights reserved

A couple of paragraphs follow, explaining what siphophores are, how they lure food, and more. The info there will make clear my favorite line: "Those luminescent matadors."

I love the beautiful language–fishes slink and briny drink and all the wonderful word choices she makes. And any upper elementary teacher (or teacher of older kids, in fact) will love using this book in their classroom. And for teachers or parents or librarians who know kids who love nonfiction, this poetry collection will give kids nonfiction content wrapped up in a fun-to-read package.

This is a really nifty collection–I had a great time reading the poems aloud, and I also learned lots of new stuff. Who doesn’t love that?

Leslie’s new book has been featured on several other blogs lately. Click below to find more reviews, her book trailer (too cute!), teaching tips, a book giveaway, and more.

Making Mittens?

Maybe you've seen Bernie Sanders and his mittens? Well, they go right along with my exciting news that my 2021 picture book is called If You Want to Knit Some Mittens. Angela Matteson did the amazing, charming art, and the book's available for pre-order now!

Otherwise, I'm just hunkering down for heavy-duty writing time! Hope to have some fun news to share soon, once contracts are signed!
