I usually feature poetry for kids or teens, but this week, I’m sharing a poem about poetry by Don Paterson. It’s one of the many I’ve been marking up in my Poetry 180 book. I just love it, and I hope you do too.

by Don Paterson
In the same way that the mindless diamond keeps
one spark of the planet’s early fires
trapped forever in its net of ice,
it’s not love’s later heat that poetry holds,
but the atom of the love that drew it forth
from the silence:

(I’m not linking to the Poetry Friday roundup because both times I’ve tried to visit Family Bookshelf this morning, my IE has locked up and shut down. It might just be the new version of IE I have installed, but I’ll let you guys find the roundup by going to A Year of Reading and checking out the Poetry Friday schedule in the low-right sidebar. If the Family Bookshelf blog is working for everyone else, would someone be willing to add a link to me there? Thanks!)
