poetryaction for Spiky, Slimy, Smooth

This picture book all about textures made me really think about how things feel. Couple that with the fact that I’ve been doing a mindfulness meditation recently that invites me to really think about how things feel against my body (the stool rung against my feet, the chair against my butt, the collar to my neck), and I was ready to focus in on the feel of things. I don’t really know why I used a comma in some lines, but not in others. Usually I try to be consistent (punctuation-wise) within a single poem. Epic fail on that this time!

It could be fun to ask students to really study the setting of a picture book and then write a poetryaction describing all the textures of it.

  1. Laura,
I love goosebumpy arms. I never heard goosebumps used as an adjective, I don’t think. It set me off on a thread of my own–moments when we get goosebumps…isn’t the mind a wonderful thing? I liked your suggestion for an exercise. Maybe you’re creating a new thread of your own to share, like poetryaction, bookalikes, 15 words or less, etc. What’s one more?
    😉

    1. Thanks, Linda:>) I’m trying to build up a good-sized library of poetryactions and bookalikes and then maybe share some teacher suggestions for using them this fall…

  3. It’s great to see a ‘wintery’ poem, Laura, in this ‘summery’ heat. My favorite thing in winter is my ‘soft, warm robe’.
