Happy National Poetry Month! Thanks for dropping by my Poem Starter Video party. Hey, don’t forget tomorrow is Poem in Your Pocket Day! Here are four short poems from The Poetry Friday Anthology your students can use, and here are loads more ideas for the day.
Today’s poem comes from J. Patrick Lewis‘ new collection (OK, one of his several new collections!)?World Rat Day: Poems About Real Holidays You’ve Never Heard Of. These poems celebrate holidays you’ve never heard of!?Pat is such an amazing and versatile poet, writing in styles from the silly to the sublime. How gorgeous is this poem below? Here, in honor of Bat Appreciation Day (April 17), is Bats:
Bats
Upside-down sleepers
Awaking in waves
Are Sweepers of Twilight
And Keepers of CavesBlack sacks in the morning
Airmailed at night
Dispatchers of insects
In boomerang flightBrushed hushes are not
Evening’s violin strings
But murmurs to moonbeams
And whispers on wings

What a pleasure to read this. The lines roll off your tongue.
Don’t they? It just feels magical to me…

I think that’s my favorite poem from the book, full of delights. I really enjoyed this challenge, Laura. Thanks!
Slug
Secreting slime keeps them alive
on a path or on your drive.
The silvery goo attracts a mate,
like sparkling fishing bait.
And being so so squishy
is not so fishy,
birds cannot hold them,
a transparent gem.
Tis other slugs need to stay on guard
for cannibal slugs around the yard.
So before you yuck! and yeuw! and shudder,
welcome slug like he’s your brother.
Hahaha–I’m not sure you convinced me of a slug’s beauty–but your poem certainly has beautiful moments–like that transparent gem! Too funny that I just loved a line about a snail in Joy’s poem today at her blog. Slugs and snails are not typically my things!
Cuteness all wrapped up in the slime of a slug!
Good one!
Reminds me of Susanna’s PPBF “Slugs in Love” which I still have on my TBR list! Welcome, slug brother 😀
Oh I haven’t read that yet either, Cathy. I need to go through the list.

Oh, that’s a funny one! A slug is not a favorite subject, but you have described them well and appealed to the reader to treat them nice. 🙂
Meant this for Catherine! Sorry!
