Happy National Poetry Month and Happy Poetry Friday! Thanks for dropping by my Poem Starter Video party. I’m?making this post live Thursday evening fo all you early-birds.?Please put your links in Mr. Linky at the bottom of the post. I have been out of town most of the week, but I can’t wait to visit all of your posts!
Today’s poem comes from BookSpeak!: Poems About Books?(Clarion, 2011), by me, Laura Purdie Salas.?This is probably my favorite writing project I’ve ever done. Combining poems and books, two of my favorite things, into poems about books (or written by parts of books), was just the most fun ever! Here’s a poem that’s a bit nostalgic (something I usually try to avoid at all costs, actually) because it’s about a part of a book–or a book accessory–that many kids today might not ever have heard of.
Book Plate
I don’t need your napkin.
I’m not your soup bowl’s mate.
I don’t want your peas or bread.
I’m not that kind of plate!Write your name upon me.
I’m a paper love tattoo.
Paste me in your book to show
that I belong to you.–by Laura Purdie Salas, all rights reserved
And here is my Poem Starter Video:
[wpvideo epbmvTZF]
I adore that poem and I LOVE cute, fun book plates!
You know, I bought some to give out when I sign BookSpeak and I never remember to do it!

Thanks for hosting, Laura! My post goes live at midnight, so the link won’t be live til then. In response to your prompt, here’s mine:
LAST PAGE
I may not have an exposition
To try to pull you in,
I really can’t do much to keep
The plot from wearing thin,
I have no thrilling denouement
To fill your growing thirst,
But I am proud that I’m the page
You want to turn to first.
– ? 2013, Matt Forrest Esenwine
Aw, that’s wonderful, Matt!
Nice Matt.
Ooh, that sneaky last page. Nicely done! Great ending–appropriately:>)
Thanks, Laura. And btw…our library just got ‘Bookspeak’ about a month ago, upon my recommendation, and they love it!

I love, “Paper love tattoo.”
I am posting early with a kyrielle by my gifted students for 26 Acts of Kindness. Have tissues nearby. Sometimes we teachers need to get out of the way and let creativity happen.
Thanks, Margaret. I agree completely. Give them a nudge and watch them fly.

I love that you were nostalgic, Laura, and love this book. It is very special, shared often at school this year. I’m in today with a bit of nostalgia of my own, an original poem about a special book in my life.
Thanks, Linda. Oh, I’m intrigued about your poem. Will be visiting shortly to read it!

I was just hugging this book yesterday! And this morning I ordered plain bookplates for signing. BOOKSPEAK! is such a delight and I love the different voices and thoughts that you give to these artifacts of reading. Thank you for all of the Poem Starter Videos this month…this was a very generous and cool project that I imagine many teachers will revisit over and over. And thank you for hosting today too!
Thanks for all those kind words, Amy! The PSV were time-consuming, even though I did them in such a simple, rustic way! But they were fun, too. I was just recommending Forest at a library event last night…

“Book Plate” is one of my favorites in the book, Laura. So charming – “I’m not that kind of plate!” Thank you for hosting! I have Joyce Sidman on the blog today – very exciting!
Thanks, Renee:>) And Joyce’s work was one of the things that introduced me to the wonder of children’s poetry. Can’t wait to check this out!

I’m sure many kids will identify with the first part of this line: “I don’t want your peas or bread.” I’m sharing Patricia Hubbard’s “Poet’s Checklist” today. Thanks for hosting!
I’m intrigued–I love poetry and checklists:>) Will be over this w/e to check out your blog. Thanks!

I think bookplates are due for a comeback! Love them, and love your poem too 🙂 Make sure you check out Today’s Little Ditty– there’s an invitation I hope you’ll be interested in!
I do, too, Michelle! I will take you up on your invitation this w/e!

Thanks for hosting,Laura, and for sharing your poem. I love coming across book plates in used books, wondering about that name on the line. I have A Stick is an Excellent Thing in my blog today, hoping it inspires folks to unplug and get outdoors.
Great idea, Jill, This is the perfect time of year for Marilyn’s most excellent book!

Thanks for hosting, Laura. Like many, I’m especially enamored of “paper love tattoo”. I like seeing your book on display in my school’s Media Center, and if I’m not mistaken, one from this book was chosen by our librarian to pass out for Poem in Your Pocket Day. : )
Oh, I love the idea of this poem being secreted away in kids’ pockets–thank you for sharing that (and if find out you were mistaken–don’t tell me:>).

Thanks so much for hosting, Laura. You know how much I love BOOKSPEAK! And YOU!
I hope I haven’t inundated you with my THREE Poetry Friday links today. Hi from TLA, too!
Thanks, Sylvia. And the more posts from you, the better. I hope TLA is fabulous. The year I went and was in the Roundup was one of the best conferences I’ve been to!

Laura,
Thanks for doing the roundup this week. In addition to my list poem “Things to Do If You Are a Bus, I announced the winner of David Harrison’s poetry book “COWBOYS” at Wild Rose Reader. I was supposed to make the announcement last Sunday–but we lost Internet connectivity here.
You’ve been in my thoughts, Elaine. I love your list poems and will get over this w/e to check it out!

Thanks for hosting Laura. BookSpeak is the perfect end to a wonderful month of poetry. Many books have spoken to us this month. I think the forest has the sweetest song, though I’m stardine to wonder.
Hahaha–oh, this is wonderful. Please write an entire poem full of plays on book titles. I’ve done a book title cento, but never a kind of parody. Fun!
I plan to on the last day of April :0) I’ve already put a line of yours in a found poem this month on my blog somewhere. David is in too.
Hooray! Can’t wait to see that. One bad thing about Poetry Month (though I hate to say there’s a bad thing) is that I hardly see any other blogs that month. So much to keep up with. It’s a good problem to have, but still!
I feel like that a bit. I’ll go on a hunt for the missed poetry goodies in May and share them with you 😉
