Happy National Poetry Month! Thanks for dropping by my Poem Starter Video party.
Today’s poem comes from In the Sea?(Candlewick, 2012), by David Elliott. I love his?trilogy of animal poetry collections, all illustrated by Holly Meade. They are just
gorgeous in both word and art.?I have a strong pull to the ocean, maybe because I grew up in Florida, and I think In the Sea is my favorite of David’s books.?I love how the elegance of this poem matches the elegance of the subject itself.
The Chambered Nautilus
Her shell spins round,
a top
a dancer
a staircase with no end
a question with no answer.–by David Elliott, all rights reserved

Laura you have the loveliest voice. That poem is great. It’s about time I read that book too.
(looking at my curtains)
A stripey fan
An autumn cracker before it’s pulled
A scarecrow’s pants that tie at the knee.
I should have picked something more interesting, that was hard 🙂
Well, thanks, Catherine! It is a beautiful book. So many moods–whimsical, haunting, terrifying–all told concisely and with great language. I love these comparisons–especially the scarecrow’s pants! I could picture all of this, so they’re very successful comparisons!

I like this book, was glad to see more ocean poems. I don’t get there often, but love it. Thanks for the video again, Laura. Good stuff!
I can just never get enough ocean poems, too. So glad you’re enjoying the videos, Linda–thanks!

HOLDING THE DAY TO DAY
This silver, spiraled pinwheel
may hold jagged, jutted flecks
of steel that can unlock my bike
chain, bedroom door or garage.
However it will never latch onto
the key that unlocks my diary.
That’ll stay a secret between
me and the pages of privacy.

I LOVE “pages of privacy.” And that comparison in the first line of a combination lock (right?) to a silver, spiraled pinwheel. Just wonderful!
