Happy National Poetry Month! Thanks for dropping by my Poem Starter Video party.
It’s a guinea pig weekend! Yesterday’s poem started came from a book called Guinea Pig Town, and today’s poem is “Guinea Pig,” by Lisa Wheeler, queen of wordplay. Lisa’s
brand new book, The Pet Project: Cute and Cuddly Vicious Verses?(Atheneum, 2013), centers around a?girl?trying to decide on a pet, but she finds there are, shall we say, drawbacks to almost every single one! I’m sharing this poem in honor of Oreo and Muffin, two of our past guinea pigs (who may or may not have had the flaw described here):
Guinea Pig
I’m studying this guinea pig.
He makes a funny squeak.He’s not a pig. He’s not a mouse.
(Some hybrid mutant freak?)His ears are small. He has no tail.
His fur is short and thick.Oh yuck! He tinkled in my hand.
I think I might be sick.ICK!

HIPPOPOTAMUS THROWDOWN
I brought home a hippopotamus
There’s no where for him to sit,
No couches, no beds, no room, NO ROOM!
So he starts to throw a fit.
He crushes our floor, thrashes our roof,
Gobbles our tables and chairs,
Lindy hops with my great, great grandma
Then burps up half of the stairs.
Our home is a heap of destruction,
My family seems upset,
Why don’t they all look on the bright side?
We now have a brand new pet.

I’m so far behind on these! I was hoping to write more, but I’ve been so busy it’s hard to keep up! Here’s the latest:
PET ROCK
I have a pet rock.
It goes where I go.
Wherever I am,
My rock is in tow.
It?s small and it?s round,
My little pet rock ?
I just wish its home
Wasn?t my sock.
