Happy National Poetry Month! Thanks for dropping by my Poem Starter Video party.
Today’s poem comes from Leslie Bulion‘s clever collection, At the Sea Floor Cafe: Odd Ocean Critter Poems?(Peachtree, 2011). The humor and wordplay in the terrific little book will really draw readers in, and prose notes make it an excellent science text, as well. For instance, the note that goes with this poem explains that an ROV is a remotely operated vehicle, and it tells why that’s a useful exploration tool.
Hooray for the Sea and the ROV
The wide ocean swells across most of our planet.
Our Earth’s filled with life; the sea’s where we began it.
To explore the seas’ wonders we’ve learned to be clever–
Let’s be extra smart and protect them forever.–Leslie Bulion, all rights reserved
And here is my Poem Starter Video:

Leslie did a great job with this book – it’s not only cleverly written, but it spotlights some unusual creatures with which kids will be fascinated.
I love a good mash-up of poetry and nonfiction! Someday, I hope one of mine will get published…sigh:>)

First off, I can’t believe you’re sleeveless in Minnesota, when I’m sweatered in NJ. Secondly, you are so poised in front of the camera, and so clever in your reading and thinking to put your website on a piece of paper to make it simple for people to grab hold of. I’m proud to know you!
Hehe–the room was plenty warm and I was sitting near a window. Thanks for your kind words, Kelly. I feel like I should be doing a much more high-tech version of this, with a QR code embedded and such. But, I’ve got to be realistic about what I have the time and energy for. I’m so glad you like them!

What Kelly said, you are so clever both with your performances and your ideas for them! Another great book choice. this is one of those “I wish my brain worked like that” books for me.
Thanks, Susan. These videos all seem VERY awkward to me as I’m processing them, but they’ll have to do. On the plus side, it’s fun reading other people’s poems out loud for an audience (even if it’s only in my head). It’s making me think harder about what makes a good read-aloud poem in my own work!

My boys LOVED this book. I too love when poetry and nonfiction come together in unique ways.

Leslie’s verse is so clever and delightful! I love the planet/began it rhyme. I’m just catching up on the first couple of days of Poetry Month, but will be sharing all your poems starters on FB and Twitter – these are so great for teachers!
