Student Equation Poems for Poetry Friday #PoetryFriday

Snowman - Cold = Puddle: Spring EquationsHappy Poetry Friday! (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.)

I am at the Denver Children’s Festival of Stories today and tomorrow, so I might not get to read your comments until Monday.

I got the BEST surprise in my Facebook Inbox last week. A Twin Cities educator told me she had lent her copy of Snowman-Cold=Puddle to a 4th-grade teacher looking for a fun poetry project. She shared these samples with me, which I’m sharing with permission!

I love the colors, the way a poet identified the essential elements of summer, and the heart.

I love the way students explored what is important to them, science, and contradictions!

In this group, I love how they explored the essential element, connected with other texts, explored interdependent relationships, and used their imagination!

And here, they worked in opinions (I’ll take winter over summer anytime, too!), relationships, big truths about learning, and lovely language.

Wow. Every single one of these equation poems offers something a little different. Aren’t they awesome?

And for lots of wonderful poetry, don’t miss the Poetry Friday Roundup with Rebecca Herzog at Sloth Reads!

  1. Laura, these are great & I’m imagining many more to come! I’m planning to come over on Saturday, will do my best to find you! Hope you’re enjoying Denver!

    1. Hooray, Linda! I’m doing a radio thingy from 10–10:20, and I’m moderating the picture book panel at 12:30. Other than that, I believe I’ll be at my table in the larger book festival area. Can’t wait to see you! (Getting ready for my flight now, and I won’t get to see any of Denver except the airport, hotel, and festival venue. Hoping to get back sometime to actually visit!)

  2. They are all so beautifully illustrated! I wish I could see them in person. “Ugly + beautiful = swan” is a wise poem. Love that!

  3. Oh, how wonderful.…to not only know your book has gone out into the world but to see how much it was loved by these students who used it as a mentor text. I love how the students showed such careful thought about what went into the equations. This is such good foundational learning! Hugs to you for this success…which is best shared with kids. Isn’t it?!

  4. Thanks for sharing these creative and sensitive poems and art–so much activity and thought going on in there! Hope the Children’s Festival went well too.
