I love Joyce Sidman’s work, and her new book Round is no exception. The magic is in how she takes a concept as huge and simple and universal as roundness and makes me as a reader feel the emotions conjured up by roundness while sharing many specific instances of roundness. My favorite is the spread contrasting ephemeral soap bubbles with galaxies. Sigh. A sphere is a strong, efficient shape, and this book holds the world inside it, in strong, startling language. It makes me want to tackle something huge and indefinable and capture it in a magical piece of writing, too. [Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2017]
Your words about Joyce’s book, captivate. You make me want to get Round this minute. I hope my poetry library will find a loving home someday! It fills me with what I love and need! So while I try to resist, I can’t.
Hehe–the recipient(s) of your poetry library will be just as lucky as the recipients of all your current poetry love, Janet!
Appreciations, Laura.
I am unaccountably attracted to round tables. I glom onto polka dots, especially on my clothing, and prefer to hold and eat round fruits such as citrus as opposed to pears & bananas. Your alert to Joyce Sidman’s ROUND helps me begin to understand the mysterious WHY. Lovely.
This book was made for you, Jan!
I’m a big fan of Joyce’s work- thanks for sharing!
You won’t want to miss this one!
