It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!
It’s Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Kathryn at Book Date. It is a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It’s also a great chance to see what others are reading right now…you just might discover your next “must-read” book!
Jen Vincent (I stole the above paragraph from her) at Teach Mentor Texts rounds up the kidlit version of IMWAYR each week.
I only join in occasionally, but I’ve decided that when I do, I’m going to use #IMWAYR to highlight picture books and easy readers by Minnesota authors and illustrators. We have such an amazing kidlit community here!
This week, I read See the Cat: Three Stories About a Dog (Candlewick). It’s by two brilliant friends of mine, David LaRochelle and Mike Wohnoutka. I love easy readers, and this is a stellar example. It’s got simple vocabulary, fabulous storylines, humor, and great art. It’s also meta. Yep. The main character, Max, has to defend himself against being called a cat named Baby Cakes (her arrival is my favorite moment in the book), being bitten by a snake, and being sat on by a hippo. Max marshals all his skills and smarts to finally make his way to what he wanted all along: a nap. This is an awesome early reader, and I think I read recently that there’s a second book in the works! What a super holiday gift this would make for your own beginning reader.
Thank you to Candlewick for a review copy!
I’ve read fewer easy readers lately because the granddaughters have moved on, but we receive an amazing number of them in bookstore donations. They are always delightful, hopefully enticing the early readers to read! Your description of this new one makes it sound so funny, Laura. I will put it on my list! Happy Thanksgiving!
It’s really delightful, Linda. Hope you find it!
this title caught my attention and i will be sure to check it out.. also, it was a pleasant surprise to see you on #IMWAYR .. i try to join in when I can though I post often about children’s books, and your books are always delightful too..
Aw, thank you, Vidya! I appreciate that :>)
What a fun book! I look forward to seeing some more of your local highlights on #IMWAYR in the future! Thanks for the great post!
Thanks! I’m making an effort to stay more on top of the wonderful picture books and easy readers coming right out of my own city :>) Hope to pop in at least once a month or so with a lovely book to share!
I’m more interested in early readers these days because my grandkids are growing up and doing lots of ‘pretend’ reading. Thanks for the heads up about this.
Such a great idea to highlight Minnesota authors and illustrators! I always appreciate it when our Canadian #imwayr participants highlight Canadian authors and illustrators. Such a neat idea! See the Cat looks very cute — I’m adding it to my TBR list. I also see I need to go hunt you down on your various social media accounts, so I’m off to do that. I hope you’re having a fantastic holiday weekend, Laura!
Thank you for such a great review of our book, Laura, and for generously highlighting other Minnesota authors and illustrators. You had some mighty fine picture books come out this year as well…SECRETS OF THE LOON and CLOVER KITTY GOES TO KITTYGARDEN!
