Listen to My Trumpet
by?Mo Willems
Hyperion, 2012
I love the Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems, so I’m excited to read this. Piggie is so cute when he runs in with his new trumpet. He can’t wait to play it for Gerald. Piggie’s expressions are SO great and revealing! Before you even read a word, you can tell how proud he is and how much he loves the trumpet.
But then disaster strikes. He starts to play. He’s trying so hard–look how red his face is! [CCRA.R.7]
But it sounds awful. Really awful. Gerald can tell it sounds awful. [CCRA.R.3] I like how his thoughts are shown with the little dots leading up to the word cloud. It’s different from the pointy thing that shows he actually says words out loud. [CCRA.R.7] Anyway, Gerald is listening and Piggie is making horrible noises, page after page. It gets a little bit boring to me at this part. I kind of skim over some of the noise words.
Hmmm…am I going to like this Elephant and Piggie book as much as I like the others?
More tomorrow…
In this blog feature, I share a picture book I really enjoy and externalize my process of reading it–and then I go back and add in the CCSS Anchor Standards that my reading thoughts relate to. I’m hoping this will be useful for those of you who are?educators sharing books with kids and perhaps give you ideas of some?elements you could include?in your book discussions.
It’s hard to beat Mo Willems. His books are always pretty charming. I will definitely check this one out. Thanks for the review.
