It’s Leap Day! If you want your students to take a leap forward (hehe) in their writing skills, try mentor texts!
A couple of weeks ago, I presented at the Hubbs Children’s Literature Conference at the University of St. Thomas (always a fabulous event for those of you near the Twin Cities!). In addition to hearing Kwame Alexander present about poetry and Catherine Thimmesh talk about creative reading techniques, I got to present two sessions on using mentor texts–how I do it in real life, and how you can do it in your classroom. I had a great time, and I promised attendees I would try to share my slides here at my blog. I’ve never used Slideshare, so here goes nothing! Click on the image below to (fingers crossed) see my slides. And thank you to the teachers and writers whose work I used to share mentor text love!
Tomorrow, I’ll share my handout.
The slides worked fine, Laura. I imagine the teachers loved your presentation. You shared so many good ideas, and great books. I’ve used your books in the past with colleagues, and know many of the others in the slides. Feathers, not just for flying is a favorite. Thanks!
