I picked up Book One of an easy reader series called Down Girl and Sit, and it is hysterical. The book is Smarter Than Squirrels, by Lucy Nolan, ill. by Mike Reed (Marshall Cavendish, 2004).
The humor and voice are what make this book stand out, so I’ll just share a quick excerpt. The narrator, Down Girl, has just spotted the paperboy outside.
I know what newspapers are for. They are for spanking. I jumped against the window. I barked and barked.
The boy dropped the newspaper and rode away. I laughed. Once again I had saved my master from getting spanked.
I trotted into the kitchen and found the doughnuts Rruff [that’s what Down Girl calls her owner] had set out for us. They were way up on the counter.
“Down, girl!” Rruff said.
I didn’t answer with my mouth full. I wagged my tail to thank him. So far, the day was going smoothly.
LOVED this book. Will be sharing it with my niece and looking for the other books in the series!
