Tomorrow is World Read-Aloud Day, and I’m wondering what everybody is doing. I had thought, what a great idea, but I am so overwhelmed right now I didn’t have time to set something up. Then a terrific teacher posted on a Facebook group that I’m in, and now I’m talking with/reading poems to 11th graders at–heeeey, I just realized they’re in a different time zone. OK, I’m Skyping with them in the morning, at any rate.?Have to make sure?we’ll all be on Skype at the same time!
Aaaaaanyway. I’ll be sharing poems and talking with Mr. Paul Hankins‘ 11th-graders in (or close to) Sellersburg, Indiana,?for a bit tomorrow morning. That’s?a much older audience than I usually work with! Mr. Hankins does have BookSpeak and A Leaf Can Be, both picture books, in his room. I’ll share from those, but I also plan to read some unpublished or at least not-traditionally published poems that are geared toward an older audience. We’ll see how it goes:>) I’ll report back next week, assuming I survive the experience!
What plans do you guys have? Are you going to do any readings, in-person or virtually?
That sounds like fun, though the older audience would make me nervous, too (even if I taught high school English)!
I’m really intrigued by the Skype school visits that seem to be all the rage now. Have you done many of them? What’s your basic format / how long? I’m in Italy, so should I ever be called upon to do a visit, that would be the only way.
As for read-aloud day, I am knee-deep in planning for Poetry Month and getting a couple of client books to print by the 15th, so will have to settle for reading to my little guys! Have a great visit tomorrow!
Yeah, I taught 8th-grade English ages ago, but still. I do Skype visits for consulting for writers, but I?m only JUST starting to develop a program for school visits. I don?t know yet what I?ll charge and how long they?ll be. It?s SO different from an in-person visit. Will definitely be shorter and cheaper. Hard to do interactive readings and things I do in person because of time delays and such. One of my goals for this spring is to get Skype visits figured out and start promoting them.
Thanks! I?ll report back, pry next week:>)
