Fiction for Hire–Ack!

February 22, 2011 By Laura

A while back, I asked for help finding trade publishers who were assigning fiction picture books or short fiction. Many of y’all generously shared ideas with me, which I am so grateful for. Most of the thoughts were related to educational publishers, but some of them or their book lines were new to me. I’m excited that I’ve just turned in revision #1 on a fiction project I’m working on for one of those educational publishers. This first book (I hope to do several more) is for sixth-graders, and it’s an adventure story. I know it’ll take several revisions to get it just right, and then I have to do art specs and such (this is a leveled reader), but the story is shaping up–hooray!

Fiction for hire is something I’ve done only on a limited basis, usually with a premise from the publisher. This project is completely original, which is terrifying, and it’s at an older range than I usually write for. Double ack!

But I’m finding it both challenging and kind of fun. Yesterday I turned in revision #1, and today, I’m going to start brainstorming more story ideas to propose.

Thanks again to all of y’all who shared information. You are so generous, and you rock!
