God bless my GPS! I would not get half as much done without it, because I’d be driving around in circles all the time. If only I had a writing GPS. For the picture book poetry collection I’m working on, I know my destination: poems based on my chosen topic that make kids nod in recognition, laugh in surprise, and say, “Listen to this!” to their friends. But how do I get there? I have lots of?brain roads under construction, it seems.?Free verse or rhyme? Poetic forms? Audience age? All funny or a mix of funny and serious? In some ways, I’d like to be able to just turn off my brain, follow directions, and have a little checkered flag teel me when I’ve arrived at the right place. Funny how that’s never happened. I’m hoping as I give my internal editor a beatdown and’dive into the poems that my destination will will eventually appear before me, as welcome as a Super America gas station when you’re running on fumes.
