Lisa Bullard and I, as Mentors for Rent, led the Redbery?Writers’ Intensive in Wisconsin recently. From Tuesday dinner through Thursday lunch, we met individually with the attending?writers. We got to meet with each writer for four separate consultations, and they had the opportunity for a Skype critique with editor Aaron Frisch of Creative Editions. The writers had tons of feedback and writing time, and Lisa and I had a terrific time working with them. And then we stayed on for part of the Northwoods Children’s Book Conference immediately afterward.
It definitely wasn’t a retreat for us, and we had virtually no time off, but it was really rewarding to work with each writer to solve career or manuscript problems. Lisa and I are trying to figure out how to make our writers’ intensive something we can take on the road to various writers’ critique groups and organizations. It’s hard to make it affordable with that much one-on-one (well, two-on-one) time, but we’ll be meeting later this month to see if we can come up with a working business model.
Here’s a slideshow (it only shows pics taken during group or free time, though!). Not sure why the captions disappear so fast. This is my first try making a movie in Picasa.

Or you can just view my Picasa album and go through the pics at your own speed or click Slideshow in the upper left corner. It will play automatically, but the captions show up longer.
It was a GREAT retreat!!! You two did a fabulous job. 😀
Thanks, Pam–it was good to get to know you better. Can’t wait to hear good news from you in the future:>)

It looked fabulous, Laura.
Thanks, Catherine! I wish I had gotten pictures of a bit of the writing work that went on, too:>)

Envious…it looks like such an enriching time.
I think/hope it was. I now want to go on a retreat where I’m retreating! I tend to go somewhere for a couple of days once a year or so for some intense writing time, but it would be fun to do with a group, too.

How great! And what an opportunity for writers. By the way…maybe your “on the road” could pass through Abilene, TX…or at least nearby 🙂
Oh….Laura! I am a retired teacher (…and I sold books for a couple of years…I think I’ve told you I sold a couple of yours)…anyway, I substitute some now. Today I was at a middle school library. They had your WRITE YOUR OWN POETRY book. So I kept it with me and got chances to read in bits and pieces. By the end of the day, I had finished it. What a great book. I’m trying to learn more about poetry because I have always written my poems intuitively. Your book really cleared up a few things for me! Thanks!
Oh, thanks for letting me know that! I had a great time writing that cook! The design of the finished book is a little frenetic for me, but putting together the content was rewarding.
Thanks, Penny! Well, Lisa and I are trying to figure out if we can make a workable business model that would allow us to offer this through SCBWIs around the country:>)
