Dublin Dinner Cruise, a Set of Pebble Wonder Poems

Poetry Friday logo by Linda Mitchell

Happy Poetry Friday! (Wondering what Poetry Friday is? Click here.) I apologize if I didn’t comment on your post last week. I’m having issues logging in to comment when I’m on my phone :>(

I’m writing this post on Election Day as I steadfastly try to calm my nerves. The seeming seclusion of the canal dinner cruise Randy and I took in Dublin feels like a perfect escape right now.

This was one of our favorite things on our trip–totally unplanned. We’ve been watching a British show called Great Canal Journeys–love it! It was lovely to discover a canal right outside our little rented apartment! We went walking along the tow path (when working barges plied the canals, they were towed by a horse on the tow path), and it was like entering a secret garden. And then we found a boat offering dinner cruises and signed up for Saturday night. Here are some photos of the canal during the day as well as pics from our cruise. A fancy shmancy floating restaurant called La Peniche runs dinner cruises and events. It was SO delicious and so wonderful! Sigh. It puts me in a reverie, just thinking about it…Here are some photos, followed by a set of pebble poems, as inspired by Mary Lee Hahn here.

And here’s my poem draft–a set of wondering pebble poems.

  1. What a lovely post, Laura. I love hearing about your trip. Your words “why are walls and leaves more romantic through round windows?” is a great observation and a wonderful example of how poets might look at the world differently.

  2. Like Rose, I appreciated wondering about the view through round windows. Sounds like a delightful memory! xo

  3. Ahh, so wonderful that you lost yourselves for a time! I love your pebble poems ‑and they are the perfect comfort coming out of this week: nuggets of joy to keep in our pockets for when despair dares visit. Thank you, Laura!

  4. Wonderful to hear about your trip and that fabulous canal dinner cruise. I’ve been to Dublin, but didn’t get to do as much as you’ve done there. Love the photos and seeing your happy faces!

  5. I loved every time you shared about your awesome trip, Laura. This, without the hooves, sad to say, sounds very special! I love “do jewelry boxes float?” — brings the picture beautifully to us! I’m glad you have the memories!

  6. Laura, the relative tranquility of your Dublin river cruise, has proven to be both a balm and an inspiration. Love Dublin. Love the closing lines of your poem and the somewhat implausible feat of getting lost. Bravo!

  7. I love your pebbles! (Thanks for the shout-out!)
Here’s one to put on your bucket list — hubby and I stayed on a narrow boat B&B on the Thames years ago when we were in England. That’s a whole ‘nother level of magic!

  8. Thank you for letting us join you as you travel down the canal. I love this! We always enjoy a riverboat cruise so your canal trip feels like something I should add to my list. Your pebble pens were a delight. I’m going to have to follow the link to Mary Lee’s post and learn more about this. Thanks for joining this week’s roundup.

  9. Thanks for a moment away from it all, lost in plain, walled-in sight! So glad you had such a good trip, Laura.
