Cock-a-Doodle-Doo [15 words or less]

Photo: Laura Salas

Wake up your poetry brains with 15 Words or Less (guidelines here)!

15WOLs

When Randy and I went up to the North Shore (of Lake Superior, in Minnesota) last month, this is one of the oversized side-of-the-road things we saw. There was also a Voyageur whose odd wardrobe and color choices made it look like he wasn’t wearing pants, so this rooster seemed the safest best!?Here are?3 things this photo makes me think of:

1)??a giant hen that lays cars instead of eggs
2)??weird landmarks we use when giving directions
3)? having a watch-chicken instead of a watchdog

And here’s my (bizarre) first draft.

In March, I Lay SUVs
white and sleek
with heated seats
to keep you warm
while winter storms

Now it’s your turn! Have fun and stick to 15 WORDS OR LESS!??(Title doesn’t count toward word count:>)?

Children’s writers: Since my blog now targets educators, my annual How Much Money Does a Writer Make post, which breaks down my income, will be in my March e‑newsletter, NOT on my blog. If you’re interested, please subscribe using the link here ?and choose A Writer Can Be.… You can unsubscribe at any time if you don’t want to continue receiving the newsletter. Cheers:>)

Note: I am visiting my mom, who is in her second week of chemotherapy for the ovarian cancer that’s returned (after 7 years in remission). I won’t have my laptop with me and won’t be able to reply to poems this week. But I hope you have fun with the giant rooster nonetheless:>)

  1. DIRECTIONS BY LANDMARKS

    Left at the rooster
    Right at the hen
    Straight past the chicks
    KFC — dead end 🙁

That would be a cool landmark to have!

    1. There is a big chicken in Marietta, GA used for directions. Your poem brought it to mind.

  3. Cock-a-doodle-doo!
    What are you waking to?
    Snow so deep-
    Go back to sleep!
    Cock-a-doodle-do!

Laura, sorry to hear about your mother. My neighbor is also fighting a return of that cancer. I will lift them both in my prayers.

    1. Cindyb, Oh, that I could go to sleep until it’s spring here in the northland. Thanks for the poem. So sorry to hear about your mother and Laura’s. Prayers for both.

  5. Take care, Laura–and Laura’s mom.

    Morning

    The rooster
    calls to the snow,
    ?Wake up!?
    but not even
    a hen listens.

  7. Henpecked

    Who, me?
    They roost, I crow.
    I love standing guard
    in the ice and snow!

Laura, I love roosters. Sending positive thoughts and prayers for your mom’s return to good health.

      1. Thanks Pat, and it’s even more funny to think that I would love roosters when I was the only grandchild out of ten who was ever attacked by Grandma’s rooster, Ol’ Red — not just once but he tried every time I came around. Paul Bunyon Country was a cute one.

        1. Thanks, Martha.
I remember being attacked by a hen, when I tried to pick up one of her chicks.
Roosters could be mean, I remember.

  9. Sorry about your mother’s illness, Laura. Best wishes to both of you.
Thanks for taking time to post the picture, a very chilly one.

    Paul Bunyan Country

    Babe, the ox,
    is coming soon
    to pull me out;
    perhaps by noon.

  11. My thoughts are with you and your mother. Hang in there.

    Smart enough to stand
    under the roo’s legs,
    a hatchling observes
    the art of intimidation.

can I blend into the snow?
    Something tells me–
    no.

  15. Laura, so sorry to hear about your mom. Strength & courage to you both.

    GOOD MORNING

    Wake up, Sunshine!
    It?s time to go!
Ignore the freezing cold and snow.
    Just crow!

  19. So sorry to hear about your mom, Laura. Wishing you both all the best.

    “Bawk! Bawk!
    Big Chicken!”
    She imagines
    herself growing massive wings,
    then splatters them
    with eggs.

  27. Monster Gone Amok

    Look out, Tokyo!
    Godzilla?s gone.
    But Rooster on steroids
    aggravated by hemorrhoids
    arrives at dawn.

    1. Barbara, loved the “roids” — I’m a little late getting on site again, but it seems that everyone has had fun with this one.
