I was in New Orleans for the International Reading Association recently and thought I’d share some pictures and thoughts over this week and next.
After a fun Friday day, including lunch at NOLA and a ride on the paddleboat Natchez,?I went to a get-together hosted by April Whatley Bedford, a fabulous teacher educator in New Orleans (at the time, but newly in New York!). It was mostly teacher educators there–a wonderful group of people collectively, but totally intimidating to me. Luckily, there were a few faces I knew from the NCTE Notables Committee or from my recent speaking experience in Vegas. Here are a few pics from Friday:

NOLA is always fun, even in a deluge. Well, maybe not if you have to drive through it. But it is picturesque.
From inside the taxi, the rain was beautiful. From outside…not so much. Usually I’m a fan of walking in the rain, but the streets were so flooded (flash flood warnings and such) that many roads were impassable on foot. Randy and Maddie were caught out in it, and they looked like they had just gotten out of the shower–with their clothes on–back at the hotel!

Hah. The “epic deluge” portion of the weekend is always how it goes in Louisiana. When I was a child, I honestly thought it rained frogs, there were so many tiny ones out in one of those epic storms… looks like a fun time was had by all.
I grew up in Fla, where daily thunderstorms are the norm for much of the year. But this NOLA storm was impressive! Luckily, I was not outside right after the rain to witness tiny frogs and earthworms. I hate trying to walk somewhere when the sidewalk is wriggling/crawling!

It always must be fun, but I’ve seen several write about the rain. Hard to imagine from Colorado! I’d love to attend IRA someday. Like NCTE, so inspiring to see so many I know from blogging only, like you, Laura! Glad you had that boat ride!
We had downpours yesterday all day just like the one Friday night in NOLA. I was shriveling up like a prune! The paddleboat ride was awesome:>)
