To say that The Flat Rabbit, by?Bardur Oskarsson, is an odd picture book is an understatement, since it’s about a rabbit that is…roadkill. Ugh. But, somehow, this ends up being a kind of sad, beautiful statement on life and what we do for each other, even those we don’t know that well.?Here’s my poetryaction for it.
And here’s a bookalikes for it, too.

I’ve been doing something new. After reading a picture book, sometimes I jot down a quick poem based on something in the book. It could be inspired by the entire book, the setting, a character, or even just a tiny detail in a picture or a single phrase from the text. I’m using picture books as a jumping off point for poems. I thought this might be something interesting for you to do in your classroom, so I’m going to share some of them here.

Laura,
Mysteries sounds like a poem meant for The Bulletin, the SCBWI magazine. It always features a kite on the front of each issue. I liked that you shared two titles with a connection. This collection is expanding as it grows.
Thanks, Linda–and what a good idea! I’ll share it with Steve and Lin. Maybe they’ll get a kick out of it. (I love The Bulletin–just got mine yesterday.) Thanks for the feedback–I’m having loads of fun with these poetryactions and bookalikes.

I love your poem but the idea of road kill being a kite
Is short of odd the beging line makes me think of a cat rather than a rabbet wondering all way gets cats in treble it is a wonderful poem
