Poetry Friday: Petting Zoo and the Poetry Friday Anthology

I have several poems in The Poetry Friday Anthology (Common Core K‑5 edition): Poems for the School Year with Connections to the Common Core, a new?offering from Sylvia Vardell and Janet Wong (of PoetryTag Time fame:>) I want to share some other poems, but I like to get permission before sharing someone’s entry from an anthology. So, for this first mention, I’ll share one of mine (and, yes, I gave myself permission):

Petting Zoo

Bossy goats,
Floppy dogs,
Silky bunnies,
Bristly hogs.

Milk a cow,
Find a nest.
I like cuddling
Kittens best!

The Poetry Friday Anthology (Common Core K-5 edition): Poems for the School Year with Connections to the Common CoreThe really cool thing about this anthology is that it’s divided by grade, and then it offers a poem for every week of the school year. So my poem above is in the Kindergarten section, Week 4: Pets. And, even better, each poem has a Take 5 box that offers 5 ways to use the poem in the classroom or to help kids connect with it. This will be invaluable for teachers and librarians! Isn’t that nifty?

I’ll share more info in coming weeks, but this anthology is available in both print and e versions. Go to amazon.com and type “Poetry Friday Anthology” into the search box and check it out!

Mary Lee at A Year of Reading has the Poetry Friday Roundup today. Go enjoy!

  1. Congratulations! My daughter’s a new teacher, so perhaps a copy will find its way into her classroom… 😉

    1. That would be a super “new teacher” gift! Tell her to put her name in her book, though, in case her colleagues come in and borrow it every Friday!

  3. This is my first look at the anthology — busy here, so waiting for that finished copy. Love your poem, and love SO MUCH how accessible Sylvia and Janet have made the poems. Wonderful!

    1. I love the way Laura took the photo and posted it, too–and I’m happy that you liked your first look, Irene! (your copy is on its way … by donkey mail … plodding up the Appalachian trail now … )

  5. Can’t wait to see your poems in this new anthology — and of course all the other poems by PF friends. The “Take Five” sidebar is brilliant. What a great classroom resource :).

  7. Congrats Laura! I’ve already ordered my copy of the anthology. I’ll be teaching K students for the first time this year. I look forward to sharing your poem with them.

  9. It will be great. I just hope I can afford to get multiple copies for the teachers in my school. They should each have one! Your poem fits my search for poems for younger students quite beautifully, Laura. Thank you for sharing!

    1. Linda: maybe the PTA needs gift ideas?

Also: there are LOTS of really great poems for K students in this book (36 of them!). It was one of my early worries that we might not have enough really young poems–but, as my grandfather would’ve said, “worry for nothing!”

  11. Congrats, Laura! Your poem is adorable. My copy is already on its way to my door, and I’m so excited to read it. I’m glad you gave a sneak peek at its innards. The thought and work that went into this is sort of overwhelming. We need to get this book on “Gifts for Teachers” lists ASAP!

    1. Exactly, Renee! I’ve Started reading the front matter just now, and there is SO much useful and encouraging info already! I hope you enjoy it!

  13. Congratulations Laura, and to all the other poets in this very exciting anthology! What a fabulous collection! I like kittens best too, BTW, and I am wishing I had one to curl up with today. I apologize for slipping up on the roundup yesterday, and I am very grateful to Mary Lee for covering for me. I have you linked today though!

    1. Thanks, Andi, I replied via phone, but it didn’t make it here–not sure what happened! Anyway, glad Mary Lee stepped in, and we all mess something up regularly, right? Must’ve been your turn, and you have a ton going on!

  15. How much do I LOVE that Poetry Friday is a THING in the real world. That is so awesome. Congratulations to the lot of you who were involved.

    1. I hadn’t even really thought of it that way, Tanita. You’re right–Poetry Friday is such a magical and intangible thing, and to have a physical version of it, for kids, is so exciting! Thanks!

  17. Thank you, Laura, for the lovely plug and for ALL your wonderful poems in the book. How clever to feature a page from the book, too– that really gives a sense of the layout. Didn’t our designer (Janet!) do a wonderful job with the LOOK of the book?! 🙂

    1. She did! Totally professional and functional and aesthetically pleasing, all at the same time! Thank YOU, both, for creating this!
