Social Emotional Learning for the New School Year!

September 7, 2022 By Laura

Welcome, teachers, to the first Classroom Connections post of the new school year! I’m so glad you’re here! First things first, I have to tell you—I’m NOT here. I’m off the grid for the first half of September, but I hope you’ll enjoy these posts anyway! :>)

So many educator friends have talked about the increasing importance of community building in their classrooms, libraries, camps, etc. It’s no surprise that several years’ worth of disrupted routines have made their mark on kids. Many teachers are spending extra time on social emotional learning themes, especially early in the school year.

I’ve been sharing two of my picture books, recently, Clover Kitty Goes to Kittygarten and We Belong, and highlighting their SEL themes. Clover Kitty is especially relevant to discussions around friendship skills, neurodiversity, and anxiety. We Belong is great for emphasizing diversity, belonging, and welcoming others. Just click on the links for more info and resources. Or click on the graphic to see which of my books have great SEL themes. Thanks!

Happy 2022-2023 school year, everyone!

[My Classroom Connections posts share a way to connect one of my books or poems to a classroom topic–often something timely that you might be covering in the next month or so. Please share this post if you have educator friends who might be interested–thanks!]

MAY NEWS

All 3 of my 2023 books are out now! Thank you to everyone who's celebrated with me, shared the books, or read/reviewed them. <3

Right now, I'm recovering from National Poetry Month! I'm also working on 2 tricky picture book revisions, and I'm preparing for a bunch of speaking events and storytimes! Join Yvonne Pearson and I for two loon-themed outdoor storytimes on June 6 and August 1. And on July 14, I'll be storying up a storm at Robert Trail Library! Hope to see you there!
