November 10 marks the anniversary of the 1975 sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald, a Great Lakes freighter that went down in a storm in Lake Superior. (You guys know how much I’m fascinated by Great Lakes freighters, right? Some good publishing news on that coming up soon!) I’m grateful for water in so many ways, but storms are always a great reminder of the power and force of water, too.
In Water Can Be…, which celebrates all the ways water shapes our world, there’s a powerful page that always makes me think of the Fitz…
I love water so much, but we should never underestimate it! I was really glad Violeta Dabija illustrated this phrase with a boat that has a color scheme that mimics the one used on many Great Lakes freighters. I think of the Fitz every single time I turn this page.

Laura, I love both of your Water Can Be and Leaf Can Be books! I love watching thunder storms. My youngest daughter and I used to watch The Weather Channel shows all the time. I hope your family is is feeling better. Also, I’m happy for you and congratulations on Lion in the Sky being nominated for a Vermont Red Clover award!
Thanks, Gail! I love storms, too. I have a rhyming nonfiction picture book about a thunderstorm coming out in a couple of years, and I can’t wait. Thanks for the good wishes, too. Lots going on right now 🙁
You’ve got me singing the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald along with Gordon Lightfoot. And hooray for good publishing news!
Hahahaha–yep. Sorry :>)
