Howdy, teachers! I usually share curriculum-related resources/info for my books here on Wednesdays. But this week, I’m sharing my “How Much Money Does a Writer Make?” post. I’ve just completed my 2023 edition. I know many educators and librarians also write. And sometimes you might wonder why authors can’t do more events or visits for free and reduced fees. Or you’re perhaps just curious :>) Anyway, here’s where you can find my update of “How Much Money Does a Writer Make?” Get your tissues ready, folks. It’s a real tear-jerker this time.
[My Classroom Connections posts share a way to connect one of my books or poems to a classroom topic–often something timely that you might be covering in the next month or so. Please share this post if you have educator friends who might be interested–thanks!]

Such a brave thing to do, Laura… to be transparent about personal finances with the goal of helping out others who aspire to earn a living by writing children’s books as well as enlightening educators about why it’s a must to charge for services. I hope 2024 in a big year for you… with Oskar in the mix I predict it will be a much better one, financially!
Thank you Laura. I always appreciate your candidness in these posts. You encourage me to think about my own writing so I can make better decisions about where to spend my time.
Thank you for sharing, Laura. You are a hard worker and so creative. Keep on doing what you love on the roller coaster of life. Wish you had earned more money.
Thanks for sharing, Laura. RE: “I could’ve taken on more work-for-hire writing, but I was already working so hard on the writing, revision, and promotion of my trade books (the books of my heart), that I didn’t want to take on more work that would use my creativity and capacity for organizing big projects.” I hear you on this! I have always put my paid-work-writing first, whether WFH or on staff. The books of my heart get the leftover scraps of time and energy, and I’m still pre-published after many years. But, I have more financial security. Best wishes for a better 2024! The year is less than half over.
