[My Writing Life] Poets in the Pink at NCTE

Zen in the Art of Writing: Essays on CreativityGreat Writing Book of the Day: Zen in the Art of Writing, by Ray Bradbury. 10 essays by?one of the most creative minds ever. If you’re not a Bradbury fan, you will be. “What can we writers learn from lizards, lift from birds? In quickness is truth. The faster you blurt, the more swiftly you write, the more honest you are.”

[I’m sharing a bunch of my favorite writing how-to books over Nov/Dec in case you want to buy yourself a great holiday gift:>) ]

NCTE was amazing, and I’ll be sharing a few tidbits about it over the next month. One of the highlights was the poetry panel I was part of, organized by the amazing team of Sylvia Vardell (of the Poetry for Children blog) and poet Janet Wong. Sylvia couldn’t attend NCTE because of cancer treatment, so we all wore pink and/or funky tights (Sylvia is the funky tight queen) in support. PublishersWeekly.com even picked up the picture!?Check out all the poets/bloggers you recognize:>)

  1. I loved the photo at PW and am happy you shared it here so I could add a comment. Such an uplifting way to support your friend! 🙂

    1. Thanks, Cathy! It was really fun to feel the group spirit at our panel. I was self-conscious the rest of the day in those bright tights, though!

  3. Laura! It was such a delight to be able to spend time with you at NCTE. You inspire me! And this Bradbury book is one of my faves. I look forward to reading all of your suggestions. Happy almost-December! xo, a.

  5. I’m a big Bradbury fan, but I didn’t know about this book. Thanks so much for the recommendation!

    1. Oh, I think you’ll adore it. When you’re already a Bradbury fan, it’s great to see comments about various stories/novels you love. Btw, just catching up on reading over the weekend I saw some good news attached to your name or one of your books. Now, of course, I can’t remember what I was going to say congratulations about. But congrats anyway!

  7. I saw this on PW the other week and thought it was the CUTEST. And, I’m really thrilled to hear about another Bradbury book — I don’t often read writing books, but I respect that man’s body of work so much.

    1. Thanks, Tanita. And just a heads-up that this book is an oldie-but-goodie. They just keep putting new modern covers on it. I don’t see the black cover mine has anywhere!
