When I sign my book Meet My Family for readers, I write the above phrase. And when I read it out loud to groups, I invite kids to look for an animal family in the book that has something in common with their own human family. It’s fun to see kids’ eyes open wide when they see a family that resembles their own—whether that similarity involves adoption, two moms or dads, family members who don’t look alike, or a youngster getting raised by extended family.
However your family is structured, you can celebrate diversity with your kids by celebrating all kinds of families during June Pride Month! You can dig even deeper with this blog post about Stephanie Fizer Coleman’s illustration process for Meet My Family.
You can also find other books to share in this “Reading with Pride” list from Publishers Weekly. And just yesterday, NBC Today retweeted this 2018 list, including Meet My Family, of 21 picture books to raise kind, tolerant kids.
[My Classroom Connections posts will share a way to connect one of my books or poems to a classroom topic–often something timely that you might be covering in the next month or so. Please share this post if you have educator friends who might be interested–thanks!]
